Mr. Saad Rajan is a consultant for real-estate design + development
companies where he advises on design, sustainability, marketing,
construction and finance. He is also currently consulting for the
University of Central Asia’s first campus in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan where he
is developing curricula for courses in the Built Environment.
Saad has prior experience working in disaster management and
sustainable housing in Central Asia for the Aga Khan Development
Network where he was stationed in both Dushanbe, Tajikistan and
Khorog, Tajikistan.
He has also worked for numerous NGO’s and private organizations in
East Africa spanning from renewable energies to artisan production.
Saad Rajan Saad holds degrees in both Civil Engineering (Western University) and
B.Eng HBA LEED MEDes Business (Ivey Business School) and he is currently completing his
Candidate Master of Environmental Design under the supervision of Dr. Brian
Sinclair.

order to achieve more effective, innovative and sustainable solutions.
Saad and Dr. Sinclair recently presented their research at the
ARCC-EAAE Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.

Ms. Cornelia E. Turney is an experienced Architect from Germany and


has worked as an Architect, Researcher and Lecturer in various
countries in the world including Denmark, Ireland, Mongolia and Canada.
Cornelia holds a postgraduate degree in Architecture from the Technical
University in Berlin. She is a doctorate scholar and awards winning
recipient within the Prof. Sinclair research team in the University of
Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design.
Cornelia’s particular interest lies in Architecture and Urban Design in
Central Asia, and her thesis topic touches on the meaning of the
Mongolian Ger in regards to the improving of the urban fabric in
Ulaanbaatar, especially for the poor. She hereby takes a sensitive
approach to cultural, sociological and ethnographic aspects. Cornelia
has lived and worked in Ulaanbaatar in 2012.
Professional memberships include the Royal Institute of British
Architects, The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, The Berlin
Chamber of Architects and The American Centre for Mongolian Studies. Cornelia E. Turney

Mr. Yasuaki Nakamura is a Manager in Y-PORT Program (Yokohama
Partnership of Resources and Technologies). He has been participating
in formulating urban development masterplans for Cebu City, Da Nang
City, and Batam City by making the best use of Yokohama's development
practices. Meanwhile, he engaged in delivering optimum technologies of
Yokohama-based companies to these emerging cities under the Y-PORT
program. He also has experiences in the field of urban planning of trunk
roads and road maintenance works.
Apart from his carrier in the City, he worked for the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and was responsible for the
Nation-wide Person-trip Survey and City Planning Basic Surveys based
on the Urban Planning Law. He worked in an engineering consulting firm
and engaged in rehabilitation/construction projects in Nepal, Bosnia and
Herzegovina and Afghanistan. He was born in Sapporo City in Hokkaido,
Yasuaki NAKAMURA which is the northernmost island of Japan.

Mr. Takeshi Sasai joined the City of Yokohama in 1996, and has been
engaged in transportation planning and management, such as
subway-extension planning, transportation survey, public
transportation promotion called “mobility management”, etc. He
also has experience in the field of disaster prevention and road
maintenance as a civil engineer. Now he is engaged in international
technical cooperation, mainly with Asian cities.

Mr. Huybrechts Eric has 28 years of experience as high level expert in
the field of Urban and Regional Planning on large metropolitan areas,
regions and countries as advisor, technical assistant and expert for high
level decision makers (Prime ministers, ministers, governors, mayors,
directors of administrations) for projects funded by multilateral and
bilateral cooperations, cities and countries. Focus on large cities in
developing countries (Addis Ababa, Algiers, Beirut, Cairo, Damascus,
Istanbul, Greater Mumbai, Phnom Penh, Rio de Janeiro, Tripoli-Libya). 2

Mr. Dao Minh Tam graduated from Hanoi University of Architecture,
and started to work for Hanoi Urban Planning Institute (HUPI) to
design urban transportation system. Since 2002, he has worked for
Hanoi Architecture and Urban Planning Authority (HAUPA) to
evaluate and approve Master Plans and Detailed Plans of Hanoi City.
He has participated in various ODA projects of urban planning and
infrastructure development such as General Plan formulation of
Hanoi City, and construction of new metro system.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Tu is an architect as well as an urban designer


who graduated from Hanoi University of Architecture and National
Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

Before being elected to Edmonton’s City Council in 2007, Mr. Ben
Henderson was very active in cultural and community-building in
Edmonton. Henderson brings a master’s degree in Fine Arts, years of
experience as a theatre director, as well as involvement with the
Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton and the Edmonton Arts
Council (as vice-president).
A member of the Old Strathcona Foundation, he was also a
vice-president of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues
(EFCL) for several years and chaired their Planning & Development
Committee. He served on the City of Edmonton’s Infrastructure and
Technical Advisory Committee, also the Advisory Committee on
Taxation of Non-Profits. He is trained and has worked in mediation
and negotiation.

Ben Henderson

Councilor of Edmonton’s City Council

Isla Tanaka is a planner with Edmonton's WinterCity Office. She


holds a Master of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies
degree from the University of Northern British Columbia. Her thesis
explored how outdoor winter recreation spaces in Prince George,
BC, were used, designed and promoted.
At the City of Edmonton, she has been involved with developing
and implementing the 10-year WinterCity Strategy. This has
included extensive consultation both in the community and within
city administration. She has also been responsible for organizing
public events, and was part of the core team that organized the
2015 Winter Cities Shake-Up conference. She also sat on the core
team for the development of the city’s Winter Design Guidelines,
and is currently involved in planning a second Winter Cities
Shake-Up conference for February 2017.
Before working for the City of Edmonton, she worked in the area of ISLA B. R. TANAKA
assistive services at two Canadian universities. As a result, she
has an interest in universal design, to create buildings and public
spaces that are safe and welcoming to everyone. This interest has
carried over to include accessibility of recreation spaces and WinterCity Planner
