DR. SHINGEO SHINGO 1909-1990, SAGA CITY,
JAPAN.

FORMATION

Degree in mechanical engineering at the Yamanashi


Technical College in 1930
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Taipei Railway in Japan. In 1930

Employed by Amano Manufacturing Plan. (Manufacturing


Section Chief). In 1943

Japan Management Association Technical Conference. In 1946

Mid-1950s, Shingo advises and applies its concepts to more


than 300 companies such as Toyo and Mitsubishi, AT&T,
Bridgestone.

Began working with Toyota in 1969 in training improvement.

1970´s Shingo traveled in Europe and North America on many


lectures, visits and assignments. (Toyota)

1988 Utah State University recognize his efforts by creating

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS

01 POKA -YOKE

A standarization technique that avoids mistakes in any


process. Poka Yokes ensure that the right conditions exist
before a process step is executed, and thus preventing
defects from occurring in the first place.

02 SINGLE MINUTE EXCHANGE OF DIE

System to reduce the time is needed to make equipment


changeovers.

03 JUST IN TIME MANUFACTURING

Strategy used to reduce costs by reducing the in-process


inventory.Reorder levels for certain inventory items are set,
and new stock is ordered only when those levels are reached.

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS

03.1 TOYOTA PRODUCTION SYSTEM

This philosophy is governed by the phrase "to do only what is


necessary, when necessary, and only the necessary quantity".
It is believed that he was the creator, but he was in charge of
analyzing it.

04 SHINGO METHOD

The Shingo method encompasses a pyramid divided a set of


principles that, for Shingo, should guide every worker towards
excellence. Ex. Respect, leadership with humility, pursuit of
perfection, scientific thinking, focus on the process, ensuring
quality from the source, system thinking, etc.

05 BOOKS AND PAPERS

He has written 14 books and hundreds of papers on


manufacturing.
