Introduction to Finnish Language
2019
Survival Finnish course (900017Y)
2 ECTS credits
Level: A1.1
Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, the student can understand and use some very
common everyday expressions and phrases, and s/he can locate informational content in simple
texts and messages. The student also knows the basic characteristics of Finnish language and
Finnish communication styles.
Content: This is an introductory course which aims to help students to cope with the most common
everyday situations in Finnish. During the course, students learn some useful everyday phrases,
some general features of the vocabulary and grammar, and the main principles of pronunciation.
The topics and communicative situations covered in the course are: general information about the
Finnish language, some politeness phrases (how to greet people, thank and apologize), introducing
oneself, giving and asking for basic personal information, numbers, some time expressions (how to
tell and ask the time, days of the week, time of day), food, drink and asking about prices.
The structures studied: personal pronouns and their possessive forms, forming affirmative,
negative and interrogative sentences, the conjugation of some verbs, the basics of the partitive
singular and some local cases for answering the ‘where’-question.
Mode of delivery: Contact teaching (26 h), online studying and independent work (24 h).
Material: Will be provided in the course’s Moodle workspace. Students print this booklet and other
material (e.g. vocabulary/glossary, exercises) and bring them to the lessons.
Assessment methods and criteria: Regular and active participation in the weekly lessons,
homework assignments and written exam at the end of the course will be observed in
assessment. Grading scale is pass/fail.
NOTE: All the obligatory homework assignments (see following page) have to be submitted in
Moodle on time, but latest two days before the exam. If you do not turn in your assignments
before the exam, it will affect your final grade of the course.
2
How to study on this course?
The course lasts 6 weeks. The lessons will be held twice a week. The written exam will be held in the
following week of the last lesson.
In addition to the contact lessons, we will use the Moodle online learning environment. There you
will find e.g. homework instructions, (extra) exercises and useful links. It is very important that you
follow the Moodle workspace after each contact lesson and do all the given exercises and activities.
And it is of course important to make time to your schedule every week for doing these tasks:
learning proceeds and you can reach your goals.
The teacher will give you further information about working in Moodle during the first lesson.
The teacher will control and also read all the five tasks. S/he will comment tasks 4 and 5 and give
feedback to the students. Notice that you will get feedback only if you bring the tasks to the Moodle
workspace in time. See the deadlines in Moodle.

Suomi on maa Pohjois-Euroopassa. Suomessa on vähän yli viisimiljoonaa asukasta. Se
on aika vähän, koska Suomi on iso maa. Suomessa puhutaan suomea ja vähän myös
ruotsia. Suomen presidentti on Sauli Niinistö. Tärkeä päivä on 6.12., joka on Suomen
itsenäisyyspäivä. Suomen lipussa on risti, ja lipun värit ovat valkoinen ja sininen. Värit
ovat kuin valkoinen lumi ja sininen taivas.
Talvella Suomessa on melko kylmä ja lunta sataa paljon. Kesällä on melko lämmin,
mutta ei ole kuuma.
Suomen suurimmat kaupungit ovat Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Vantaa, Turku ja Oulu.
Helsingissä on noin 600 000 ja Oulussa noin 200 000 asukasta.

SUOMEN KIELI - Introduction to Finnish Language
- Finnish is the first official language of Finland. The second official language is Swedish (ruotsi).
- Finnish has approximately five million speakers and a variety of dialects and registers.
- The Finnish language is a member of the Finno-Ugrian language family like Estonian (viro), Hungarian
(unkari) and indigenous Sami (saame) languages.
- The structure and vocabulary of Finnish differ greatly from other languages spoken in Europe e.g.
Indo-European languages. However, Finnish today also shares a lot of semantics and vocabulary with
Western languages.
lots of endings and suffixes instead of prepositions or words to express different meanings and
relations the important information is usually at the end of the word
words are created by adding suffixes to the words or sticking two or three words together
written and spoken languages differ from each other. Spoken Finnish sounds different depending on
which part of the country you are in.
6
Pronunciation
- Finnish is a phonetic language: in Finnish each written letter represents one and the same
sound, and each phoneme is pronounced always the same way, despite of its surroundings.
- Most sounds may be short or long. It is very important to keep short and long sounds
separate, because the duration of a sound can affect the meaning of the word.
- Mostly, the sentence intonation falls off. Even in questions it does not rise.

There can be only either back or front vowels in one word. Neutral vowels e and i can appear with both front and
back vowel words. (Exceptions of the rule are loan words as ‘dynamiitti’ and ‘analyysi’.) Furthermore, combined
words as ’polkupyörä’ consist of two different words.
When you add suffixes to the words you have to be careful. It depends on the vowels of the word, which one of
the suffixes is attached to the word, the back or the front vowel variant, e.g. -ssa/-ssä. In combined words the
last word determines the vowel of the ending.
Neutral vowel words (include e and/or i) get usually the front vowel variant (ä, ö).

tällä kurssillakin. Partitiivin voit tunnistaa päätteistä -a, -ä, -ta, -tä, -tta, -ttä.
Partitive is one of the most commonly used cases in Finnish. We have used partitive also on this course
already. You can recognize partitive from its suffixes -a, -ä, -ta, -tä,- tta, -ttä.
