Stress and Strain – Axial Loading
 Today’s Objectives:
 Students will be able to :
1. Draw a free body diagram (FBD),
and,
2. Apply equations of equilibrium to
solve a 2-D problem.
3. Understand the concepts of
normal and shear stress
4. Analyze and design of members
subjected on axial load or shear

Solutions
 The allowable stresses are

 st  fail
 st allow  680
  340 MPa
F .S . 2
 al  fail 70
 al allow    35 MPa
F .S . 2
 fail 900
 allow    450 MPa
F .S . 2

 There are three unknowns and we apply the equations of equilibrium,

  M B  0; P1.25  FAC 2  0 (1)

  M A  0; FB 2  P0.75  0 (2)

Solutions
 We will now determine each value of P that creates the allowable stress in the
rod, block, and pins, respectively.

 For rod AC,  

FAC   st allow  AAC   340 106  0.01  106.8 kN
2

P
106.82  171kN
 Using Eq. 1, 1.25

 For block B,    
FB   al allow AB  35 106 1800106  63.0 kN

P
63.02  168 kN
 Using Eq. 2, 0.75

Solutions
 For pin A or C,  
V  FAC   allow A  450 106  0.009  114.5 kN
2

114.52  183 kN
 Using Eq. 1, P 
1.25

 When P reaches its smallest value (168 kN), it develops the allowable normal
stress in the aluminium block.

The frame is subjected to the load of 4 kN which
acts on member ABD at D . Determine the required
diameter of the pins at D and C if the allowable shear
stress for the material is tallow = 40 MPa. Pin C is
subjected to double shear, whereas pin D is subjected to
single shear.
