1. What competencies does a translator need?
Translation has competencies that must be met by those who practice it. It is a mistake
to think that the only condition for translating is knowing a language. Competencies
are the knowledge that a translator must have. These competencies can be divided into
two parts: The first section: Language competencies (meaning the foreign language):
These competencies are formed by studying the language in a scientific and accurate
manner. The most important language competencies that I think the translator must
have are:
1. Deep understanding of the grammatical system of language.
2. Good knowledge of linguistic expression means.
3. Idiomatic expressions.
4. Knowing the largest possible number of translation conversions
5. Seeing different opinions about the concept of "equivalence

2. You are a professional translator. What questions do you ask your client before
starting work on your translation? Why?
The most important thing you should do before every translation project is to get to
know your client’s needs and requirements. It is also crucial that you understand the
scope of work you are about to complete. The following questions will help you
decide if the partnership is a good choice and provide you with the initial guideline for
the project.

1. What is their business
2. Are they specialised in a certain industry
3. Have they worked with another LSP before, and if so, why did they choose to
leave them?
4. Why did they choose to work with you?
5. Are native speakers required for proofreading?

Translation is a way to keep pace with the civilizational progress and the enormous -1

PART 2/ Translate the following two texts below. For each of the texts you need to fill in

1. TECHNOLOGY HELPS ARCHAEOLOGISTS

The remains of the ancient town of Pompeii have always been a reference point for
archaeologists to study how the Romans lived and how they built their towns and cities.
However, radar technology is now helping archaeologists explore a Roman town without
breaking ground.
The ancient Roman town of Faleri Novi, 31 miles north of Rome in the Italian region of
Lazio, has remained hidden beneath the soil until now. Faleri Novi was first occupied in 241
BC, and it is roughly half the size of Pompeii.
Archaeologists used advanced ground penetrating radar, GPR, which helped them scan the
town at different depths. The team discovered a baths complex, a market, a temple, a theater,
and even a sprawling network of water pipes.
GPR has major implications for archaeologists who study ancient cities that cannot
be excavated because of modern structures.

‫‪2. POLICE OFFICER IN PRISON‬‬

‫‪Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to George Floyd‬‬
‫‪´s death.‬‬
‫‪On Monday, Chauvin appeared in court by video, and the judge offered a bail of $1 million‬‬
‫‪under certain conditions. Chauvin must stay in Minnesota and surrender all firearms and‬‬
‫‪permits. He must not contact Floyd´s family, and he is not allowed to work for the police ever‬‬
‫‪again. If Chauvin does not accept these conditions, the bail will be $1.25 million.‬‬
‫‪If Chauvin is convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison. He is being held at Minnesota´s‬‬

Translation:
Kurdistan Minister of Health warning: Corona is in the "most dangerous outbreak"
stage

Kurdistan Region Health Minister Saman Al-Barzanji said on Tuesday that the outbreak of
the Corona virus in the region is "the most dangerous", which requires adherence to the
maximum possible population of preventive and health measures.

During the past twenty-four hours, the Kurdistan Region recorded 166 cases, bringing the
total confirmed cases to the virus to 2,473 cases.

To date, 54 people have died of the virus, most of them in Sulaymaniyah, the second largest
governorate of the region
