Onsen Manners and Etiquette

Onsen, or natural hot spring baths, are a vital aspect of Japanese traditional culture. These
baths feature mineral-rich waters with temperatures ranging from 38 to 50 degrees Celsius
(Kashiwaya, 2023). On the other hand, Sento are indoor, public bathhouses equipped with artificially
made bathtubs and hot water (Inside Japan Tours, 2023). Japanese people often visit these communal
baths for relaxation and rejuvenation (Kashiwaya, 2023). Both Onsen and Sento adhere to the same
rules of etiquette (Inside Japan Tours, 2023). It is important to note that individuals with tattoos are
often denied entry to most Onsens in Japan (Japanese Pod 101, 2020), due to the historical association
of tattoos with criminals (Inside Japan Tours, 2023).

Upon entering an Onsen establishment, you are required to remove and put away your
footwear (Japan Living Guide, 2022). Then, you may head to the bathing area, entering through the
section assigned to your gender (Japan Living Guide, 2022). As it is a shared facility, you must uphold
cleanliness and personal hygiene at all times. In the changing room, you must take off all clothing and
refrain from wearing any swimwear or slippers (Kashiwaya, 2023). You should place all personal items
in the lockers, bringing only a small towel into the Onsen. Make sure to keep a large towel in your
locker to dry yourself after bathing (Japan Living Guide, 2022). Before soaking in the Onsen, you are
required to wash your body thoroughly (Japanese Pod 101, 2020). At the Onsen, keep your hair and
small towel outside the communal bath waters to keep them clean (Inside Japan Tours, 2023). You
must maintain the tranquil environment of the Onsen and respect other guests seeking tranquillity.
Avoid disruptive behaviour, such as running around or diving and swimming inside the water (Walk
Japan, 2023). Refrain from taking pictures or staring at others while soaking. Chatting is allowed but
be mindful not to be too loud (Kashiwaya, 2023).

After soaking, you should wipe off excess water before returning to the changing area (Walk
Japan, 2023). Before leaving the establishment, place your used towels in the designated basket. Do
not take any service goods and facilities home, as they are meant for use by subsequent guests (Japan
Living Guide, 2022). Overall, by adhering to these rules of etiquette, you can ensure a respectful and
comfortable experience at the Onsen.
