CONDITIONAL
This is used to speculate about what might
happen, what may have happened and what
we would like to happen. These sentences
are composed of a proposition or clause
with "if" and a main proposition. In many
negative conditional sentences there is an
equivalent alternative construction that
uses "unless" instead of "if". There are 5
types of conditional and are described
below.
The "," indicates that the order of the
sentence was reversed, it is usually inverted
for conditionals but the "if" can also be
found as a connector, in that case it is found
in the middle of the sentence and is not used

1) Type 0
General concepts
Simple present if Simple present
If this thing happens, that thing happens.
Si esto sucede, eso sucede
That thing happens If this thing happens.
Eso sucede si esto sucede
For example:
If you heat ice, it melts.
If it rains, the grass gets wet.
2) Type 1
A possible condition and its probable result.

For example:
If it rained, you would get wet.
If spoke Italian, I would be working in Italy.
4) Type 3
A non-real condition of the past and its
probable outcome in the past.
Past perfect if Perfect conditional
If this thing had happened, that thing would
have been happening.
Si esto hubiera sucedido, esa cosa habría
sucedido.
That thing would have happened if this
thing had happened.
That thing would have been happening if
this thing had happened.
Esa cosa habría sucedido si esto hubiera
sucedido.
For example:
If it had rained, you would have gotten wet.
If I had accepted that promotion, I would
have been working in Milan.
5) Mixto
A non-real condition of the past and its
probable outcome in the present.
Past perfect if Present conditional
If this thing had happened, that thing would
happen.
Si esta cosa hubiera sucedido, esa cosa
sucedería.
That thing would happen if this thing had
happened.
Esa cosa sucedería si esta cosa hubiera
sucedido.
For example:
If we had looked at the map, we wouldn’t be
lost.
If you weren’t afraid of spiders, you would
have picked it up and put it outside.
When a conditional sentence is made and
the verb "BE" in the past, it is always used as
"WERE" with all subjects, "WAS" isn’t used.

MODAL VERBS
These are those verbs, which help a
sentence have a better meaning thanks to its
function. You can use them when you want
to give another meaning to a sentence.
Below are the most common:
Can
Its meaning will depend on what you want
to say. You can use it to express some
possibility or request, or to say that you are
qualified or qualified for something.
 Forgive me, can you tell me what time is?
Could
This modal verb is the past form of "can". Its
meaning is the same, but the verb tense
expresses something that has already
happened, or is also used to provide
alternatives.
 We could meet up today.
May
It is a variation of the verb "can", but it is a
more formal modal verb. If you want to ask
permission, this is a good way. With it you
can count or establish a possibility.
 May I speak now?
Might
For suggestions or possibilities, this verb
expresses it clearly. Its use depends on the
context, being much more flexible than
"may".
 He might come tonight.
Will
This is a verb that talks about the future.
Prediction, question or concern, establishes
that it is possible or already possible that
something happens afterwards.
 We will listen to the next time.
Would
Talk about habits you used to do before. It
can also be used in the future tense if your
intention is to show that you are willing to
do something or establish conditions.
 When I was in Spain, I would speak
Spanish.
Must
Express need or a strong suggestion. Also, it
implies that you can come to suppose
something.
 You must be joking.
Shall
This is a verb not very common for being
formal. Its meaning is like that of the verb
"will", it expresses something in relation to
what may happen.
 We shall dance together soon, my lady.
Should
It is used more when giving advice, making
or asking for suggestions, opinions and
actions, or to generate a certain level of
expectation about something future.
 Should she doesn’t back?
Ought to
It is not very frequent that you find yourself
with this verb. However, its meaning is
similar to "should".
 I ought to practice more piano.
