Based on the text from SUBJECT 1, devise a pre-reading activity:

Lesson aims:

A1: to introduce a famous piece of literature;

A2: to give the students a chance to practise their listening, speaking and writing skills;

A3: to enrich vocabulary.

Pre-reading activity

Aim: to create interest in the topic; to stimulate SS’s imagination; to introduce the novel to the Ss.

Objective: to write a list of things and tools that they need on a desert island.

Procedure: T tells Ss that they are going to read a literary text from a famous novel written by a Nobel Prize writer –
William Golding. T asks Ss to imagine that they shipwrecked on a desert island, they have to do a list about the
things, and tools they need to build a shed and to defend themselves about the wild animals. T asks Ss to work in
four groups and gives them a 5 minutes to complete the task. Than each team come to the board and write their lists
and the complete one is considered the best.

Timing: 10 minutes

Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, Ss-Ss.

Devise three exercises, two based on two types of ‘indirect’ items (five items per each exercise) to

measure students’ ability to express concession and one based on a direct item to measure

students’ ability to express apology. 3 exercises x 6 points

3. Write a letter of apology to a friend explaining why you could not come to his birthday party. (80 words).

Objective: Given a writing task activity, the students will be able to write a letter of apology.
Marking scheme: content 20 points, organization 5 points, grammar 10 points, vocabulary 5 points.
