following protocols will be in effect to create a safe, positive learning environment:

1. Respect everyone in the virtual classroom.

2. Be on time to class.
3. Please keep your camera on—I am excited to see and know you! You may ask your teachers
for college recommendations, and they need to know who you are.
4. Follow the school dress code … be professional in your appearance.
5. Make sure everything in your background is appropriate.
6. Do not eat in the virtual classroom.
7. Eliminate distractions—no cell phones, headphones, dogs, cats, or siblings.
8. Stay awake, positive, and focused.
9. Always keep a pen and your English III notebook next to your computer for notes, reminders,
etc.
10. If there are issues that I should know about, email them and/or meet with me in Student

entries, reading checks, etc.).

HOMEWORK

Daily reading.
Composition assignments will be given frequently throughout the course of the semester.

LATE WORK AND MAKE-UP WORK

Late work and make-up work will be accepted without penalty if the student and/or parent provides a
reasonable excuse as to why the work is late in an email to ljohnson5@wcpss.net. Examples of
reasonable excuses as provided in the Wake County Student/Parent handbook are illness or injury, a
death in the family, health care appointments, court appearances, and religious observances.

If no reasonable excuse is presented, minor assignments will be accepted with a deduction of 10 points
daily for academic courses and 20 points daily for Honors courses. Major assignments will be accepted
with ten points deducted for each day late.

When possible, students should let me know if they are going to be absent (health care appointments,
family emergencies, religious observance, etc.). Students are responsible for obtaining make-up work.

STUDENT HOURS

This is the time to connect with me online to ask questions, to make up work, etc.

2nd Block: 9:05-9:35 Tuesdays and Thursdays.

3rd Block: 12:00-12:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays.
4th Block 2:05-2:35 Tuesdays and Thursdays.

INTEGRITY POLICY

We will follow the Athens Drive integrity policy. If a violation of the Honor Code is suspected, the
student(s) will meet privately with the teacher. When required, administration and/or the National Honor
Society will be notified of Honor Code violations.

Plagiarism is submitting someone else’s work as if it were your own. The penalty for a plagiarized essay
or other copied work, in whole or part, is a grade of zero and an administrative referral. Students should
ask their teachers if they have questions about whether their work might be considered plagiarized.

● Study and work in an honest and respectable manner.

● Complete and submit your own work.
● Work with others only under prescribed circumstances.
● Do not copy someone else’s answers in or out of the classroom.
● Cite all sources.
● Complete quizzes and tests without assistance from any outside sources.
● Cell phones and other electronic devices must be put away before class.

TENTATIVE SYLLABUS

English 3 is the study of American Literature with the goal of continuing to enhance students’ reading,
writing, and speaking/presentation skills in preparation for their post-secondary education. Standards are
available at the website of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to read, research, and write about issues connected to our
magnet theme of medical science/global health initiatives.

Anchor texts and pacing guides are provided by the Wake County Public School System. The Unit 1
anchor text is The Great Gatsby; Unit 2-4 anchor texts will be determined by Wake County at a later date.
