The Problems and Concerns of Far Eastern University Commuter Students

in their Use of Public Transportation Vehicles in their Daily Travel

I. Methodology

In order to determine the problems and concerns of Far Eastern University

commuter students, a descriptive qualitative research design was used. According to
Burns and Grove (2013), a descriptive study defines an opinion, attitude, or
behaviour held by a group of people on a given subject. It is also used to justify
current practices, make judgments and develop theories. A qualitative design is a
research method used extensively by researchers studying human behavior and
habits. (Shuttleworth, 2008) This type of research design focuses on the reflection of
people to a certain topic, unravelling the hidden meanings behind people behaviours,
habits, and words, thus providing data that cannot be collected and interpreted
through the quantitative approach. The study was descriptive qualitative in nature
because it aims to describe and determine the current problems and concerns of the
students towards the usage of public transportation vehicles. The study will utilize
interrelationship studies by administering a case-study design.

The focus population of the study is the commuter students of Far Eastern
University. The sampling technique that will be used in the study is purposive
sampling technique as it is a non-probability sampling that is more effective in both
qualitative and quantitative research. The researchers will purposely select fifteen
college students of Far Eastern University, regardless of their courses and year-
level, because they are seen with the ability to provide necessary information that
can be helpful to the study.

The study will make use of the information gathered through an informal face
to face interview. The type of interview is semi-structured to make sure that the
needs of the study are met by the flow of open-ended questions but the responses
are not limited to the questions. A phone recorder will be used to obtain and further
study the data. In pursuance of establishing reliability, a pilot test will be conducted
with three respondents of Far Eastern University to correct flaws and weaknesses
within the interview design. After gathering the data, data analysis will be employed
by raw data management, data reduction, data interpretation, and data
representation.
