Further Mechanics 1
Summer 2018
Please note that this mark scheme is not the one used by
examiners for making scripts. It is intended more as a guide to
good practice, indicating where marks are given for correct
answers. As such, it doesn’t show follow-through marks (marks
that are awarded despite errors being made) or special cases.
B1 – working mark. This mark is usually given when working and the answer
cannot easily be separated.
GCE AS Further Mathematics (8FM0) – Paper 25 Further Mechanics 1 model solutions (Version 1.0) 2
This document is intended for guidance only and may differ from the final mark scheme published in July 2018.
Question 2 (Total 9 marks)
Part Working or answer an examiner might Mark Notes
expect to see
(a) Work-energy equation: M1 This mark is given for correctly quoting
the work-energy equation
kinetic energy lost =
potential energy gained + work done
(c) The model has assumed a constant B2 These marks are given for two valid
resistance, so have a variable resistance or improvements stated
have air resistance proportional to speed
Do not model the parcel as a particle so
that the possibility that the parcel rotates
as it moves up or down the slope can be
considered
Consider the dimensions of the parcel

This document is intended for guidance only and may differ from the final mark scheme published in July 2018.
Question 3 (Total 9 marks)
Part Working or answer an examiner might Mark Notes
expect to see
(a) P = Fv B1 This mark is given for the use of P = Fv
seen or implied
GCE AS Further Mathematics (8FM0) – Paper 25 Further Mechanics 1 model solutions (Version 1.0) 4
This document is intended for guidance only and may differ from the final mark scheme published in July 2018.
Question 4 (Total 14 marks)
Part Working or answer an examiner might Mark Notes
expect to see
(a) M1 Complete strategy e.g. use of CLM,
impact law and solution of simultaneous
equations

This document is intended for guidance only and may differ from the final mark scheme published in July 2018.
16d 16 x A1 This mark is given for a correct
(unsimplified) equation using
Time for Q = 3u + u
distance
time = speed
48( d−x ) B1
= u
