Reflection on Managerial Accounting 1

Introduction

As, a Math major, I have learned to appreciate the beauty yet exhilarating moment when my

mind engages with calculating and solving problems. The most remarkable thing I found about

this subject is that it presents all basic concept of accounting that I previously did not know. The

subject covered the study and practice of identifying, measuring, analysing, interpreting, and

communicating financial information and developing skills on decision-making for the pursuit of

an organization’s goals. The class was divided into 6 groups and each group was assigned one

module to discuss. The class started with Module 1 that was discussed by our professor and

followed by the group reports.

Body of the Essay

Most people find managerial accounting as a nerve-wracking subject and that includes me. I was

really anxious days before the discussion because we were tasked to discuss Capital Budget

which includes a lot of formula and solving. Though I am a Math major, I am not really

confident because the most challenging part is my acquaintance with Accounting terms. The

terms in Accounting were so new to me and maybe I could easily make a mistake. Even during

the preparation of our PowerPoint presentation, I had encountered difficulties. I expected to pass
the report with flying colours or fail and hit the bottom hard. My anxiety escalated with the

assumption that our professor will be hard on us since he is a dean.

The most anticipated day came, February 9, 2020. Our class was assigned in the biggest function

hall. As I arrived, I was able to recognize my group mate Ma’am Ginsola. We further deliberated

and modify our presentation and before we finish it, the class started. As our professor discussed

Module 1, he told us not to worry because he knew that we were not accountants and he assured

us that he will help us throughout the whole class especially during our reports. The assurance

gave me confidence on my report. After his discussion, I was able to differentiate financial

accounting and managerial accounting. As the class continued, I was able to appreciate and

understand the terms. I enjoyed the reports of other groups especially the Cost-Volume Profit

and the ABC. The two topics involve computation and help a lot in decision-making. The

supplemental explanation of Sir Bombeo every after the report were big help in understanding a

certain topic. We did our report in the afternoon, at around 3:00pm. Our report used quantitative

tools that helps with the judgement. It was music to my ear when our professor said that he

commended us. I learned that managerial accounting is not just about computation but also

acquiring skills on management since this subject introduced the use of accounting to facilitate

decision-making.

Conclusion

The subject helped me apprehend the main objective of Management Accounting. It overcome

my prior assumptions and the stigma surrounding the topic. Since the main skill that we must

have learned throughout the learning experience was decision-making, I could confidently say

that it was a productive experience and a very useful one. The decision we make plays a crucial

role in an organization. It can make or break us.
