Biology

Growth habit: Erect; tubers in chains on


rhizomes; up to 0.7 m

Description: It is highly variable perennial


sedge. Flowering stems are erect, up to 60 cm
tall, 3-sided, smooth with swollen bases. The
leaves have a distinct midrib, are linear, usually
shorter than the flowering stem, up to 7 mm
wide and emerge from a sheath around the
shoots base.
Ecology
The inflorescence is a terminal, open umbel
subtended by several leafy bracts. Roots are

fibrous, rhizomes are wiry, dark and persistent,
connecting a network of shoots and tubers.
Elevation: Up to 1,800 m.a.s.l.
Life cycle: Perennial
Control management
Competitiveness: Moderate to low, but
competitive early
Cultural control: Stale seed bed; suppressive
crop with narrow rows; high plant density;
Method of reproduction: Tubers and rhizomes
flooding suppresses growth but does not kill
tubers ; inter-row cultivation; organic mulching
Dormancy: Apical dominance in tuber
will also reduce the weed pressure.
