Film Analysis Template

In a film analysis, you systematically evaluate a film’s effectiveness including what it does well and
what it does poorly. It can be used to discuss a science and technology documentary film. You must
review the film carefully and may need to look up terms or concepts you are unfamiliar with or research
related reading prior to writing your analysis.

Instructions:

1. Watch the film Gattaca found on this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzG3I7nMEks

2. Answer the following guide questions as short as possible.

Guide Questions:

1. If we were able to exclude the eccentric, the different, the misfits, and the weak, what would
happen to society?

-I think the society will be in a worst condition. We cannot just simply exclude people who are
eccentric and different because maybe they can change and think a major possibility on how
the society improves. Also the misfits and the weak should not be excluded because as you
imagine if we always think that the society will be perfect always, our perspective would be
wrong because people in this world are not perfect, they can also make mistakes. Thus misfits
and the weak should be included in the society because as they gain experience in some
essential activity, their personality and knowledge will improve. If this happens, the
communication, cooperation, motivation, development, and innovation in the society will be
strengthened thus preventing to happen a worst condition.
2. Compare Jerome and Vincent. What were their strengths and their weaknesses? In what
ways were they the mirror image of each other?

-They were both determined and wished to be at the highest however they were knocked
down. Vincent had invariably desired to travel into space however he cannot do that because of
his heart disease but he was resolute and lands up ever-changing like Jerome. Jerome was a
swimmer who invariably won and through a championship game he loses and gets third and
walks in front of a car and was to travel in a wheel chair for the rest of his life.

3. Why is there such resistance to the new order imposed by this society? E.g., Vincent's
girlfriend; the test technician?

- The entire film suspects a certain resistance against this society 's new order. Irene Cassini,
Vincent's colleague at Gattaca and his girlfriend discovers he's illegitimate and uses
experiments to join the deep space mission of the Gattaca Aerospace Company. She tells
nobody he's a "faith baby," that's unquestionably resisting society 's new order. Furthermore,
Dr. Lamar, Gattaca's laboratory technician who checked workers, admitted that he was all along
aware of the Vincent impostor before he took off. Vincent is wrong, since he has no results
from Jerome so Dr. Lamar is still correct for him.

4. What do you think is wrong with the society portrayed in "Gattaca"?

- There is most pressure on being genetically excellent and they don’t inspect the potential
from a person even if they can do the same achievements, if not even more, without the best
test of those genes modified world score won't matter whether people don't have to take a
blood test.

5. Wouldn't parents want to ensure that their child was perfect and had the attributes of
physical attractiveness, intelligence and athletic prowess to be able to do whatever he or she
wanted in life? If so, why is the society portrayed in this film so devoid of happiness, vitality and
fun?

-As a future parent, I would like to develop the whole-being of my children, especially their
social, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. I do not expect that my child would be perfect
in all aspect of his/her life because I am not a perfectionist and I wanted to show them to work
hard and smart from a specific activity that makes them happy and if they have a wrong
decision and action, I will help them to fix it and let them learn from it and this is what I wanted
to my future children. Everything that you can see in this world has a small or large deficiency,
thus do not always think about “perfect” but instead, do the right thing which makes you happy
and learn from the mistakes of your decision or action.
6. Some people have countered the vision of this film by saying that our strengths are
inextricably combined with our weaknesses. Do you agree with this?

- I agree that our strengths are inextricably combined with our weakness, because as you
imagine if you are fear riding a roller coaster but you wanted to try it that means you need to
fight with your weaknesses and thus you need to set aside your weaknesses and let your
strength overcome it so, therefore, we cannot combined strengths from weaknesses because
there would be conflict. Just like for example in the film, Vincent can go so far undetected by his
strengths and weaknesses. He’s got to suffer and fight more than anyone else. He 's safe for
swimming back there's nothing. His "weakness" has motivated Vincent's perseverance.

7. What limits should be placed on genetic engineering? Should it be allowed at all? Should it
be limited to the elimination of disease and physical imperfections? Why or why not?

Genetic manipulation would have limitations. Genetic engineering should be considered for the
same purpose to eliminate anatomical imperfections and ailments and nobody needs their
children to get sick and have a higher chance of death. Moreover its limitation is that if the
process goes wrong wherein the gene inserted in wrong DNA of one’s person, it can cause
tumor and thus health of person will be worsen. We should consider its negative and positive
impact so that we can be aware on its outcome.

8. Should we permit people to make human clones of themselves? What about someone who
cannot have a child? Should we permit people to make human clones of other people?

For me, if you are not Naruto you cannot be able to clone yourself, kidding aside if you are not
a professional in cloning humans or cloning yourself, you should not do it because there is a
high possibility that your outcome will fail. For those people who cannot have a child, cloning is
not a solution, and one of the best that I suggest to them is to adopt a child. I think permitting
people to make human clones of other people would not be a good idea because if we allow
them Genetic variability will decrease because it will increase the same cells over and over
again.

9. If you would permit human cloning, would the clones have all the rights of "natural" people?

-For me, yes, because they are just same person and we can consider it as identical. The rights
of natural people must apply also to human clones because they have also the potential of
knowing what is wrong and what is right.

10. Did this society, with its rigid requirements of genetic perfection, foster the ethical value of
respect for the differences among people?

The Gattaca’s society is obsessed with the elimination of human defects and seeks nothing less
than perfection of mankind. Therefore, culture is based on eugenics, which changes the genes
of a human eradicating and promoting energy, elegance and knowledge of diseases and illness.
It's not the solution ethical meaning and consideration for people's distinctions.
