a What do you understand by the term “self-help book”? Can you think of any which
have been best sellers in your country?
• I understand by the term self-help book, than reading it will help you think better about
the problem you have.
• I have not really read any self-help book from my country.

b Look at the front cover of a recent self-help book, and read the description from the
back cover below. Answer the questions with a partner.
1 Who is this book written for and how would it help the reader?
• They are written for people who work in advertising, marketing, management or sales,
or are just curious about how to be more influential in everyday life.

2 Can you guess the answers to the two questions at the beginning?
• Yes, for the first question, may I use the floor please or would you be so kind. for
someone to do me a favor or perform a certain action.
• Well, asking them to do things less frequently so that it results in more has good results
because many people do not like to receive orders but if you do it with kindness and
ask little people they like it. everything is emotional intelligence.
3 Does this description make you want to read the book? Why or why not?
• Sincerely. that book looks interesting but it is not the kind of book I like to read. so I
wouldn't.

following information.
What is the technique suggested?
• The suggested technique is persuasion. This study demonstrates the unique
motivational influence of the word because.

What experiment(s) were done to prove that it worked?


• In one study, she arranged for a stranger to approach someone waiting to use a
photocopier and ask, “Excuse me I just have five pages. May I use the machine? " In
this situation, 60 percent of the people agreed to allow the stranger to go ahead of
them. However, when the stranger followed the request with a reason ("because I'm
in a rush") almost everyone (94 percent of the people) complied.

d Tell your partner in your own words about the technique and the research.
• I find the research technique very interesting, I must say that it has to do fundamentally
with emotional intelligence. Being respectful and direct you can get to achieve a lot for
me, the investigations showed that.
e Discuss with a partner:
• What did you think of the two strategies? Do you think they would work on you?
• The two strategies seem very interesting to me and I think that if they would work with
me because it is part of emotional intelligence.
• Do you think they would help you in situations where you need to persuade someone
to do something?
• Yes, I think those strategies would help me persuade anyone because when one
speaks politely, other people respond in a good way. It is very important to take into
account the studies carried out because they are statistical data that demonstrate the
real functioning of human behavior for decision-making.
