Lesson 2: Assurance of Salvation

Teacher’s Manual

WEEK 2
Welcome/Icebreaker: SAWSAW SUKA
Have all participants form a circle. The objective is to test sensitivity and reflex.
Ask them to raise both hands (shoulder level); left hand with open palm and right hand with
finger pointing downward toward next person’s palm. The Facilitator reads 1 Thess. 1:1-6,
2 Tim 1:1-7, Phil. 4:1-7 and Col. 1:1-13 and every time the word LOVE or JOY or PEACE is
mentioned, the participants will try to catch the finger of the person on his right while taking
off his left finger away from the person on his left. The first participant caught 3 times gets a
SURPRISE GIFT and not a penalty.

LESSON 2
ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Objective: To help the new believer be assured of his/her salvation.

What does the Bible teach about our salvation?

Is there any guarantee from God that Christians are saved?
Can we receive an assurance of salvation in this life?

An assurance of salvation is very important because it gives us boldness to share the gospel and it will help us
grow strong in the Lord.

BIBLICAL CONCEPTS ABOUT THE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION

1. THE BIBLE: THE BASIS OF OUR ASSURANCE.

A. Salvation is a gift. We all know that a gift is free. The one who pays for the gift is the giver not the
recipient. And the moment we receive a gift, it is already ours. The Bible tells us, “For it is by grace
you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is a GIFT OF GOD – not by
works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2: 8-9).” Salvation is gained instantly, not a process.
B. Salvation is a Present Possession of those who believe in their Hearts – The moment we surrender
our lives and receive Jesus as personal Lord and Savior, we receive eternal life and we cross-over
from death to life. John the Beloved wrote the believers to assure them that they already have eternal
life because of their faith in Jesus:
“And this is the testimony, God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son, he who has the
Son has life; He who does not have the Son of God does not have eternal life (1 John 5:11-13).”
Notice that the Apostle John said that –YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE – he did not say You might
have (uncertain) or You will have (futuristic). When John said YOU HAVE, it means eternal life is a
present possession of all who believe in Jesus, the Son of God. God said it, and I believe it, and
that settles it for me! Hallelujah!

2. THE CROSS OF CHRIST PROVIDES COMPLETE SALVATION.

A. Sin is indebtedness before a holy God and the payment is death (Matt.6:12; Rom.6:23). The creditors
are the ones who set the standard of payment not the debtors. According to God (The Creditor) the
payment for our sins is death. Death means the cessation of life or separation from life and it means
separation from God Who is the author of life and LIFE Himself. Death also means eternal separation
from God in the lake of fire (Rev.20:14-15).God is a God of love He does not want us to be separated
from Him here on earth and for all eternity, God is also a God of justice He must judge sin.

B. The Cross is an instrument of God’s Love and Justice – The cross is an instrument of God’s love for
it saves man from sin and it is also an instrument of justice because sin is judged once and for all
through the death of The Son of God to pay the sins of all men.
C. The blood of Jesus is so holy and meritorious before God – In the New Testament Christ being the
Lamb of God (John 1:29) offered His own blood to the heavenly tabernacle (Heb.9:11-12) and as a
result He “obtained eternal redemption”. This is the reason why all men can receive forgiveness from
every sin the moment they truly repent and confess their sins (1 John 1:9)

3. OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD GIVES US ASSURANCE OF SALVATION

The Trinity is involved in guaranteeing our salvation. Jesus promised that no one can snatch us from the
hand of the Father (John 10:28-29), and nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8: 35-39).
When we believe in Jesus, whom the Father sent to redeem us, we become children of God (John1:12).
Jesus himself assured us that He will never leave us nor forsake us (John 10:28-29).

A. The Inner Witness- The Holy Spirit in us assures us of His presence and our salvation (Rom.8:16:
Gal.4:6).

B. The Outer Witness: Salvation is not only freedom from the penalty of sin (John 3:16) it is also
freedom from the power of sin (1 John 3:8-9). A real child of God will not allow himself to live in
sin, he may fall into sin; but he cannot dwell in sin. Our changed life is a sure proof of our salvation
and assures us that truly God is at work in our lives.

Let us give thanks to the Lord for the assurance of salvation. Let us remember that the GUARANTEE is not a
license to sin. The Lord forgives our sins and purifies us from all our unrighteousness for us to glorify God
with our new life in Christ.

Activation: Lead participants in prayer – “Lord Jesus, thank You that through You I am now a part of God’s
forever family. Thank You for making me Your child, destined for heaven. Change me, Lord, from glory to
glory. Create in me a hunger for your Word. I believe that nothing can separate me from Your love. Thank
You for assuring me from your Word that truly I belong to You and that you have made me God’s beloved
son/daughter. In Your name Jesus I pray. Amen.”

Group Discussion:

1. Where do we get our assurance of salvation?

3. Have you ever doubted your salvation?
