The basic DSP operations are:
Analog signal, sampling and reconstruction.
Transformations
Modulation.
Convolution,
Correlation,
Filtering,
Subject of digital processing had everything one wanted in Engineering!!!

Use of Mathematics as a language for thinking about engineering problems.

It made a strong connection to digital computation as a means for implementing
systems.
It offered the possibility of interesting applications to motivate beginning engineers
to do the hard work of connecting mathematics and computation to problem
solving.
Basic DSP Operations require only simple arithmetic operations of MULTIPLY,
ADD / subtract and shifts.
There is similarity between most of the DSP Algorithm operations.

DSP Learning process;
• Theory and Practice should be balanced.
• Consistent Notation is an indispensable part of accuracy.
Ambiguous notation leads to confusion.
• Examples must reflect real life applications. Make everything
elementary.
• Understanding of DSP algorithms can be greatly enhanced by
reading a piece of software code – MATLAB, LabVIEW or any
other High level language
• Practicing Engineer feels" The Engineer needs practice and not
theory”.
However the practicing Engineer needs to update the theory –
Basic concepts and advanced material.

A Tele- communicAtion System:
The system includes all as below and may exceed in some:
1) A source coding that reduces the redundancy of the message
2) An error coding that allows detection and / or correction of errors that may
occur during the transmission
3) A message sequence of T-spaced symbols drawn from a finite alphabet
4) Pulse shaping of the message, designed in part to conserve the bandwidth
5) Analog up-conversion to the carrier frequency
6) Channel distortion of transmitted signal
7) Summation with other multiplexed users, channel noise and other interferers.
8) Analog down-conversion to IF (including band-pass pre-filtering around the
desired segment of FDM pass-band.)
9) A/D impulse sampling (Preceded by anti-aliasing filters) at a rate of 1/Ts . The
sampling rate is assumed to be atleast as fast as the symbol rate 1/T.
10) Down conversion to base band frequency (requiring Carrier and phase
synchronization).
11)Low pass (or pulse shape matched) filtering for the suppression of out of band
users and channel noise.
12)Down conversion with timing adjustment to T-spaced estimates.
13)Equalization filtering to combat inter symbol interference and narrowband
interferers.
14)Decision device quantizing (soft decision) outputs of equalizer to nearest
number of source alphabets (Hard Decision)
15)Source and error decoders.
