Usability Test Plan Example

You can learn a lot from the work of experienced usability testers, and the first time you plan a
usability test it’s best to take a look at examples of their previous work. In this template, we provide
an example of a usability test plan created by Frank Spillers, CEO of Experience Dynamics as part
of a project for SkyTeam China.

The key takeaways of this example include:

• The usability test plan starts with a brief description of the background of the test: Status,
authors, focus and other details such as actions and deadlines.

• The objectives and test tasks are placed on separate lines to ensure they are clearly defined.
There are extra columns for comments and anything else required for the task.

• The objectives are relatively abstract e.g. “test SkyTips section of website” and these get turned
into concrete, user-centered test tasks that clearly relate to their objective e.g. “You will have 4
hours at San Francisco airport. What is there to do in the airport?”

• There is space at the end of the plan to add any other questions they would like to ask users.
These will typically be questions that sit outside of the test itself, like “How often do you fly” or
“Do you have any experience with SkyTeam China?”
