Stratacrete

Shotcrete Operator
Training Package
INTRODUCTION
This instructional program has been developed by StrataCrete to assist shotcrete
operators working in the mining industry to meet or exceed the nationally recognised
standards of competence established for this skill. The program has been designed in
accordance with competency-based training concepts and relates directly to:
¾ MNM20205 Certificate II in Metalliferous Mining Operations (Underground)
¾ MNM30205 Certificate III in Metalliferous Mining Operations (Underground)
¾ MNM40205 Certificate IV in Metalliferous Mining Operations (Underground)
¾ MNM50105 Diploma of Metalliferous Mining Operations (Underground).

All learning material, assessment instruments, activities, and related resource

documents covered in this program relate to the application of shotcrete by
Stratacrete personnel. It is important to note that changes to equipment, company
operating or mining procedures, policy, or production techniques must be
reflected in the instructional material.

This program has been designed as an instructional resource comprising five

levels.

¾ Level 1. Trainee Shotcrete Operator

¾ Level 2. Pump Operator
¾ Level 3. Nozzle Operator
¾ Level 4. Advanced Nozzle Operator (or Trainer-Assessor)
¾ Level 5. Project Manager

PREREQUISITES
Prerequisite qualifications for the Level 1 Trainee Shotcrete Operator program
are that the trainee must have:
¾ been authorised by Stratacrete management to undertake training as
a shotcrete operator.
¾ successfully completed the Queensland Metalliferous Generic
Induction
¾ successfully completed the Queensland Metalliferous Underground
Elective Induction.

SOURCES OF REFERENCE
The following resources have been used to form the basis of development for this
training module:
¾ National Mining Competency Standards
¾ Stratacrete Quality Management Manual
¾ Site Policy and Procedures Manuals
¾ Performance Training Learning Material
¾ Site Safe Working Procedures
¾ Site Environmental Policy
¾ Queensland Generic Induction Packages
¾ Mining Journals and Technical Publications
¾ Workplace Health and Safety Documents

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY

Promoting an attitude of safety awareness, and identifying potential hazards
associated with equipment operation or maintenance form an important part of
any training program. While we believe we have identified the potential hazards
that exist when operating the equipment detailed in this manual, other hazards
may be evident which apply to particular site use, applications, and procedures.

It is essential, therefore, that the instructor highlights these hazards and relevant
control procedures throughout the delivery of this program.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Clients are assured that the requirements of this module are implemented in
accordance with Australian Quality Training Framework standards for Registered
Training Organisations (RTOs). This is a commitment to clients (e.g. learners,
employers, government, industry bodies, community) that the program will be
delivered and assessed according to the stated and implied standards (i.e.
professional delivery, valid and reliable assessment, resources as stated). Any
substantial alteration to the assessments, resource material, or management of the
program without the approval of the RTO will void the quality assurance.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND LEARNING SEQUENCE

This program can be used as a self-paced learning package, or in conjunction
with an instructor managed program. The material is therefore presented in a
logical sequence that may or may not conform directly to the outline provided in
the relevant Competency Unit Learning Programs.

RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS
The human and physical resources detailed below are the minimum that must be
available for the delivery of this module.
HUMAN RESOURCES
All instructors must have a minimum training qualification equivalent to BSZ
404A ‘Train Small Groups’, which is one of the modules included in Certificate
IV Assessment and Workplace Training.

Instructors must also have a qualification equal to or higher than the skill level
required for this program. For the purposes of expediency, proficiency and
credibility, the people involved in the instruction should have a suitable level of
hands-on practical experience in applying shotcrete on site and be skilled in all
aspects of the work as would normally be required in a production situation.

Assessors for this module must have successfully completed the following
modules of Certificate IV in the Assessment and Workplace Training (BSZ 98)
or a similar nationally recognised equivalent:
¾ BSZ 401A Plan Assessment
¾ BSZ 402A Conduct Assessment
¾ BSZ 403A Review Assessment.

PHYSICAL RESOURCES
The following physical resources should be made available to the instructor:
¾ appropriately equipped training venue with suitable
instructional aids
¾ transparencies or Power-Point presentation and handout
material as required for theoretical course content
¾ access to specialized shotcreting equipment for practical
demonstration
¾ suitable training area away from production traffic
¾ access to machine operator's and manufacturer’s literature.

While this program is designed to be self supporting, the trainee or instructor

may seek more detailed information to assist in learner understanding. This
program should therefore not be seen as the only source of training material.
Every attempt should be made to source supporting data and training aids to
assist in the flexibility, accuracy and presentation of information.

CONTENT
Ultimately, the instruction, practical experience and assessment should focus on
demonstrable competencies. Some topics in this program may therefore not
require in-depth or supervised instruction, as these may comprise part of another
course, or stem from previous trainee experience. In any case, the content
established in this program is based on what MUST be known to meet the
competencies required for a particular site rather than what COULD or MAY be
needed in order to satisfy the performance criteria of a general subject. Any
‘could know’ material should be provided at the discretion of the instructor and is
generally not included in this program unless it serves to assist in understanding,
remembering, or the achievement of a particular skill.

The following list of topics will be covered during the course of this instructional
program. The topics have been grouped to suggest a stepped introduction to the
knowledge required to become a proficient shotcrete operator. As the operator’s
knowledge and experience increases, more complex learning material is
introduced.

The first two levels, when successfully completed, will meet the knowledge
requirements of the MNM20205 Certificate II in Metalliferous Mining
Operations (Underground).
The third level, when successfully completed, will meet the knowledge
requirements of the MNM30205 Certificate III in Metalliferous Mining
Operations (Underground).
The fourth level, when successfully completed, will meet the knowledge
requirements of the MNM40205 Certificate IV in Metalliferous Mining
Operations (Underground).

Stratacrete is committed to supplying operators with quality training to

ensure operations are conducted safely and efficiently.

ASSESSMENTS
The learning outcomes for this program are confirmed through the assessment
instruments provided with this training module. Trainees will be deemed to have
acquired the desired competency standard when they can demonstrate to an
accredited assessor that they can safely and efficiently apply shotcrete in
accordance with the Performance Criteria identified in the appropriate
Competency Standards.
Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) and Recognition of Prior Learning
(RPL), are ways of recognising that a person has acquired the necessary
competencies through previous learning or experience. Regardless of how the
particular skill was acquired, there is provision in the training structure to
recognise this skill and provide the appropriate award.

STRATACRETE TRAINING PACKAGE PLAN

The Stratacrete training package plan units of competency for Levels 1, 2, and 3
are listed below. The trainee shall achieve recognition for each of the following
competencies during the course of their Stratacrete training.

As per the AQTF standards for Registered Training Organisations, prior learning
and current competency will be recognised. If documented evidence of such
competency is not available, the trainee will have to be re-assessed.

SUMMARY
Stratcrete values training as a means of improving operational safety and
productivity. People who can use this training in the workplace to work safely
and efficiently will be valued employees. By establishing a career path based on
training and experience, employees should be motivated to achieve their
maximum potential. By providing a Statement of Attainment for competencies
completed, the employee gains a skill that is recognised in any metalliferous
underground operation in Australia. As each competency is completed, the
trainee is one step closer to a Qualification recognised under the Australian
Qualification Framework.
