Application Form
Scottish Charity Number: SC 039 637
Thank you for applying for one of the tenancies for our new houses in the village of Kinloch
on the Isle of Rum. This application is for housing only. The Trust wishes to attract
applications from individuals or families who are keen to actively contribute to growing and
developing this young community. And to commit, ideally, for at least two or more years.
It is essential that the Trust considers the wider aspect of growing this community, attracting
individuals who are keen to do the hard work of contributing both as volunteers, helping to
run local institutions and organise events, and through creating or filling vital, income
generating employment. You will, therefore, have to show in your application how you
will financially support yourself and/or your family on the island.
There are few and limited opportunities for salaried work on the island. There are, however,
a wide range of opportunities for self-employment for those willing and able to create their
own work. If you have a proven track record of successful self-employment in your chosen
field then please describe that in your application.
For example, food production, catering and childcare have some scope for expansion and
development if you have the ability to grasp and develop any opportunities you can find
there.
Similarly, we have a constant demand for skilled trades people to repair and maintain our
houses, hall and other buildings and our wider, off-grid infrastructure of water system and
hydro as well as our woodlands. SNH also have maintenance requirements and to a limited
extent Mowi and Highland Council do too. If you can prove and show that you can and will
do this kind of work then again, please show this in your application. We spend a lot of
money on maintenance. It would be good if some of this could go to a local self employed
individual or possibly to a salaried post (that you would help create).
There are also opportunities for developing self-employed seasonal tourism-based businesses.
We have new moorings in the bay and are developing some shore facilities. SNH own a
castle which is a major tourist draw. The mountains, the bird and wildlife and the geology of
Rum are all exceptional and have huge potential. We also own small lodge in a stunning
location, out at Harris, on the south west of the island, which is currently in need of much
repair. This would be an amazing world-class opportunity to fundraise for and develop for
the right individual.
Alternatively, if you have a track record of fundraising for salaried, project development
posts (for which you could be a candidate), IRCT would be very keen to hear about this.
There is some scope for at least a one-day/week post working for the Trust in either Finance
or developing Housing or Energy, etc. There is also some scope for joint posts with
neighbouring islands or other nearby communities.
None of the above opportunities, are necessarily easy ways to earn a living. It would be hard
work and suited only to individuals with the necessary determination and patience to make
possible in terms of access to land or other resources in making your business a success.
