1. Introduction
The feasibility study for road connectivity between Phuntsholing and Gomtu under
Samtse Dzongkhag was conducted by the following officials from Design Division
and Regional Office, DoR Phuntsholing.
1. Tempa Thinley, Dy. Executive Engineer, Geotechnical Section, Design Division,
DoR Thimphu
2. Phuntsho Rinzin, Dy. Executive Engineer, Road Design Section, Design Division,
DoR Thimphu
3. Samjay Kumar Bomzon, AE, RO, DoR, Phuntsholing
4. Kunzang Dorji, Survey Associate, RO, DoR Phuntsholing
In a view to keep Gomtu connected internally given the importance of the
industries and transportation of goods, the Department of Roads was instructed by
the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement for carrying out feasibility study for
road connectivity between Gomtu and Phuntsholing.
While conducting feasibility study the team found two alternative options for
connecting two towns as shown in figure 1.

dry during dry season but as per the site evidence, huge volume of debris
transports through these gullies during monsoon. The link road after crossing
Hawri khola‐I terminate at last zig of existing Tshering mines road that leads
towards Indian border.
The alignment then follow Tshering mines road(G‐H) towards its mining location
for about 1.80km. The ruling gradient of existing mining road is +/‐10%. There are
no major road slope instability issues along existing mining road but water
management structures like road side drain and cross drainage to guide surface
runoff water during incessant rain are need to be placed.
To link unconnected stretch between upper Hawri and Gokul Dangra farm road, it
requires road length of approximately 5km(H‐I) with 7% gradient. This road will
takeoff from 1.80km of Tshering mining from the last zig near Hawrikhola. The link
road is in ascending gradient from the start and after providing four hairpin bends,
the road will be passing
through the slope between two
electric towers. The alignment
then traverse through lowest
saddle of Hawri Banjangdangra,
the boundary of Tading and
Tading
Gomtu
Phuentshogpelri gewog. After
crossing saddle, the alignment
is passing through rocky stretch
for about a kilometer long. The
alignment from saddle to

Baunikhole falls within the
boundry of Lhaki limestone mine. After Baunikhole the road alignment will pass
above Devithan pakha (the place where local community pray for their local deity,
it is also a water source) and then pass over Yakakhola (16m span) and aligned
through upper Gokuldangra village. After providing two hairpin bends, the
alignment will cross over Bodelay stream and join with 0.90km long Gokuldangra
farm road. The width of Bodelay flood plain is 47m, there is no ideal bridge
location seen at both up and down stream of Bodelay. There is also a requirement
of a bridge approximately 20m span over sangurikhola stream on Gokuldangra
farm road.
The last segment of option‐II alignment follows 2.5km long Lhaki Limestone mining
road (I‐E) and merges at the takeoff point of Sater Village farm road at Titi. General

slope angle of proposed link roads ranges from 25 ‐55 . The total road length for
option‐II alignment(B‐F‐G‐H‐I‐E) is 20.80 km.
3 Geology
The study area is in subtropical region with an elevation ranges from 200m to
2000m above mean sea level. It received high intensity of monsoon rain compared
to other parts of the country. The geology consist of Quartzite, Limestone,
Dolomite, Conglomerate, Slate and Phyllite which falls under Baxa group.

5. Cost estimation for proposed new link roads
The cost estimate for construction of the proposed link roads are worked out
considering Dzongkhag Road standard and unit cost used for budget proposal for
12th five year plan as shown in table below.

6. Conclusion/Recommendation
In general, both the alignments are passing through similar geological and
topographical terrain. The length of new link road required is 6.60km in option‐I
and 7.30km option‐II and rock cutting is also expected more in option‐II.

The existing farm road along option-l required some minor 'restoration and
maintenance specially at last section of Bucca farm road for about 4 km like
clearing of minor slip and filling of eroded road surface. Restoration of road
formation for about 80m is required along Sater village farm road.
Tading farm road is a part of option-ll alignment, about 2.30km of this farm road
traverse along Purbay river bed. As the intensity of monsoon rain is high in this
area and Purbay river transport huge volume of debris, the flow of traffic specially
in monsoon season would be unreliable. The option-ll proposed link roads
requires to cross about six number of gullies which requires bridges or elevated
cross drainage. This alignment is also traversing through steep rocky stretch of
about one kilometer. However, overall length is shorter by about 3.5 km in option-
llthan option-1.
