Unprecedented times call for

unprecedented measures.
“Unprecedented Measures for Unprecedented Times” – were the
words of Rishi Sunik – and for me, that encapsulates the current
situation and latest announcements perfectly .This statement in action
can be seen since the past 5 months all over the world due to the
‘COVID-19’pandemic, there was a time when closing down all the
schools / colleges , everyone working from home and the streets
looking as empty as those of a deserted town seemed like a bleak
possibility , so bleak that these thoughts didn’t even cross our mind
before it actually happened.

India as a country was not very well prepared for facing corona virus
and hadn’t even given it much thought till it actually affected the first
Indian. Our entire country went into a lockdown, dropping the
economy drastically , hundreds of people lost their jobs and hospital
beds were lesser than the infected patients.

What can be more unprecedented than this?

Several measures were taken to keep this situation controlled , on 22nd

march , India observed a voluntary 14 hour public curfew , it was
followed by mandatory lockdowns in COVID-19 hotspots and all
major cities , further , on 24 march and extended till 1st june.

The UN and WHO praised India’s response as robust and strict but
much needed. Corona virus also had a drastic impact on slum
dwellers and under poverty line people who suffered the biggest blow
out of all of us, which is why the govt. took several measures and
reduced the cost of necessity goods for them , ex: wheat at 2 rupee per
kg and cylinders at a minimized rate .

On 19th march , during a 30 minute live telecast , to acknowledge the

work being done by various sectors during the outbreak , he urged the
people to gather in front of their own doors , balconies and applaud
for 5 minutes, India also has a covid 19 economic task force long with
a rupees 150 billion aid for healthcare introduced by the government ,
another such activity was done on april 3 where all the citizens were
urged to switch off their lights and ignite nine diyas for nine minutes ,
moreover a 20 trillion economic package has been introduced for
labourers , farmers, honest tax payers , MSMEs and cottage
industries. Such activities and actions strengthened the faith of the
people in the government, gave them hope and the prospect of unity,
in adversity.

Such drastic measures, monetary and otherwise would never have

been taken if not in the face of a pandemic, India has spent a lot of
resources and time in trying to cure this virus before it spreads that
too at the cost of our economy dropping drastically , India had not
gone through a pandemic before so we as a nation had no idea how to
deal with it and care for each other but we did , so this an example of
taking unprecedented actions in such situations .
The second example I’m going to talk about is the recent demise of
George Floyd who was murdered on may 25, 2020, George was a 46
year old black man killed in Minneapolis , Minnesota during an arrest
for allegedly using a counterfeit bill, Derek Chauvin, a white police
officer , knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost 8 minutes while Floyd was
handcuffed and begging for his life saying repeatedly “I can’t
breathe”

My intention behind mentioning this truly nerve wrecking instance in

my essay is not a sadistic one but rather I want to shed some light on
how this one instance was truly mortifying but also had action taken
on it like never before , it was an unprecedented situation with equally
unprecedented measures. This one instance gave birth to the black
lives matter movement which has given justice to George Floyd ,
Breonna Taylor and many more who have been the victims of hate
crime since 1920 and been killed for only being considered a minority
and slave race.

These are some of the few reasons why I strongly feel that
unprecedented situations like this ,which challenge our integrity ,
which shake our believes , which put our humanity in check , which
make it hard for us to sleep fearlessly at night , situations which tend
to scare our materialistic minds , like the falling of the economy or a
recession, these are the situations which are truly unprecedented and
require our unprecedented measures and efforts , be it for ourselves,
for our families , for a member of another caste/race/minority or for a
daily wage worker.
