CONTEMPORARY ISSUES

Contemporary issues are crucial news reports that are currently affecting the society,
environment and economy. Where topics may include: abortion, world poverty, animal rights,
immigration, physician-assisted suicide, freedom of religion, hate speech, cloning, income
inequality, pornography, gun rights, racial profiling, capital punishment, overpopulation,
prostitution, drug legalization, torture.

It is important to be updated in these issues because we should always be aware of what

is happening around us, to prevent us from being ignorant and oblivious to danger and etc.

The benefit of having information on the current issue is we can give our opinions on the
issue and discuss what to do to remove or reduce the effect of the current issue in order to make
the area as safe as possible. Automatically, We should acquire information to know what's
happening around, to always be updated to social issues and also to help us discover new things
and help us open our eyes to problems around the world that we did not notice before. Being
informed allows you to become part of something bigger and connect with the rest of the world.
By staying informed, you become a part of the solution. It would be advantageous to us while
gathering knowledge on current topics since we would be able to provide our own ideas and
perspectives, which would aid in progressive living.

Here are examples of the current issues that has been happening in our country, the Philippines,
that is very alarming:

1. The rapid spread of the coronavirus in the Philippines

In two days, Philippines records more than 41,000 new COVID-19 cases On Saturday,
September 4, the Philippines registered 20,741 new coronavirus cases, bringing the overall
number of cases in the country to 2,061,084. This is the second day in a row that the number of
new cases has surpassed 20,000. On Friday, September 3, the total number of cases registered
was 20,310, resulting in a total of 41,051 new cases in just two days. Saturday's cases are also
the second-highest single-day total in the pandemic, after 22,366 on August 30. Active cases, or
individuals who are currently sick with COVID-19, account for 157,646 of the total confirmed

cases. In addition, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 189 more deaths, bringing the total
number of deaths to 34,062.

2. Upcoming 2022 Election

The 2022 Philippine presidential and vice-presidential elections is scheduled to be held on

Monday, May 9, 2022, as part of that year's general election. This will be the 17th direct
presidential election and 16th vice presidential election in the Philippines since 1935, and the
seventh sexennial presidential and vice-presidential election since 1986.

Incumbent president Rodrigo Duterte is ineligible for re-election, pursuant to the 1987 Philippine
Constitution. The position of president and vice president are elected separately, thus the two
winning candidates could come from different political parties.

With the approaching election campaign, declared candidates Isko Moreno, Manny Pacquiao,
Ping Lacson and Tito Sotto expressed their criticism against the Duterte government.

Conclusion:
All in all, acquiring information on current issues not only helps us be informed but also
aids in the problem’s solution, with the saying “modern problems need modern solutions”.
Acquiring information has already helped us many ways in the past years (e. BLM movement,
human rights, saving the environment and etc.) and will continue to help us solve current issues
with the help of others around us. That is why it is important to inform others and for people to
acquire information on such current issues to spread awareness and come up with better solutions
and opinions. The world must be open to new information especially on current issues at hand.
The more information acquired and spread, the more educated the people are and a more likely
chance for the people to act on the issue.
