Phasors
• Sinusoids are easily expressed in terms of phasors, which are more
convenient to work with than sine and cosine functions.

• “A phasor is a complex number that represents

the amplitude and phase of a sinusoid.”
• A complex number z can be written in rectangular form as z = x + jy
• Here, x is the real part of z; y is the imaginary part of z.
• Complex number z can be represented in the following three forms:

Relation Between Rectangular and Polar

Form of Phasors
• The relationship between the rectangular form and the polar form
is shown in Fig. , where the x axis represents the real part and the
y axis represents the imaginary part of a complex number.
• Given x and y, we can get r and  as –

• On the other hand, if we know r and  we can obtain x and y as –

• So, z can be written in the following ways -

Converting Sinusoids to Phasor Form

• If we consider the sinusoidal voltage –

• We can covert this sinusoid to phasor form in the following way -

• Any form of sinusoid can be converted to phasor form using following formulae-
