EC265 HISTORY AND ECONOMICS OF DEVELOPMENT (2

UNITS 30 HOURS)
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:
i. Expose students to the current and past views of development planning within in
developing economies.
ii. Analysing poverty and its impact in economic development.

Course Description
It focuses on four main areas: Economics of Underdevelopment, Economic History of Selected
Groups of Developed Countries, Brief Economic History of Tanzania and Current issues in
development.

Course Contents
Economics of Underdevelopment; Economic History of Selected Developed Countries;
“Old” Developed Countries (North America, Europe); .Japan; Newly Developed Countries
(Asian Tigers); Brief Economic History of Tanzania (focusing on Macroeconomic
Aggregates and poverty) Mixed Economy (1961-1966); State –led growth (1967-1983);
Adjustment period (1984 to present; Current issues in Development; Human capital issues
(problems in Africa, policies for development, flight) Population, fertility and economic growth

Assessment: At least two test and two assignments


Delivery: 15 lectures of two hours each; Coursework 30 percent; Final Examination 70
percent.
