GUIDELINES FOR MID-TERM ESSAY

Course: Development Economics_EN_CLC01 K11

Time: Semester 2-2223
Objectives:
- Application of concepts and models learnt in class in understanding of real-world
issues
- Development of writing skills
Assessment weight: 20% of the total course assessment; equal grades assigned to each
group member
Group working: 2-3 students/group (from either/both classes)
Due date: Before 26 March; submitted files in Word or PDF format, uploading to a
Google drive
Q/A session: in class
Length: from 1,500-2,000 words, written in English
Questions: Groups can choose EITHER one of the two follow questions, with
respectively suggested contents and presentation.
1. Describe and analyse the development path of another country or a province in
Vietnam and draw experience for the development economics of Vietnam at
national or provincial level.
- Normally, this is asking about the knowledge you gained during the Week 1-3.
- Topics are for examples the common characteristics of developing economies;
stages of growth; structural change; international dependence theory; market-
friendly approach; sources of growth such as capital investment, technologies,
knowledge and human capital; multiple equilibria; HRV diagnostics framework.
- The essay should be structured as follows:
o Introduction: context and concepts (0.5-1 page)
o Main part: describing the development path/story/challenging issues of
another country OR a province in Vietnam, presenting in sequence, or
highlighting about 5 characteristics of the story (2 pages)
o Analysing what factor contributes to such a low/high level of development
(1 page)
o Conclusion: drawing lessons for the development economics of Vietnam at
national or provincial level (1 page).

2. Describe and analyse one sof the developmental issues which you have learnt
during Week 4 onwards and propose respective solutions for the sustainable
development of any country.
- It is about choosing one of the developmental issues you learnt in class during the
Week 4-8.
- Topics may include urbanization, human capital development; environment and
technologies; 4.0 technologies; improvement of business environment and
competitiveness, trade and investment.
- EXCLUDING POVERTY, INEQUALITY, AND POPULATION GROWTH OF
VIETNAM
- The essay should be structured as follows:
a. Introduction: context, concepts (0.5-1 page)
b. Main part: describing the developmental issues in Vietnam, presenting in
sequence, or highlighting about 5 characteristics of the issue (2 pages)
c. Analysing why such a developmental issue matters, and verifying the
influential factors (1 page)
d. Conclusion: proposing solutions to achieve the sustainable development at
national or provincial level (1 page).
