ACTIVITY 1:

Change is good. Adaptability and resilience in the process of change is crucial.

As humans, we can adjust in constantly moving environments, but it takes time and effort. Every
individual experience shapes how one adapts in a new environment and overcomes the stress
related to the adjusting period. In today's rapidly changing world, adaptability and resilience
have become essential qualities for success. Whether we face unexpected challenges, navigate
personal or professional transitions, or strive to develop a growth mindset, our ability to adapt
and bounce back is crucial.

Whether a new academic study year begins, or one is starting a new job or even starting a
journey of becoming an entrepreneur, most young people experience the feeling that they are in
a traffic jam full of obstacles, challenges and uncertainties, emotionally overwhelmed by all
these stressors. it is normal to feel all that, because whether this is a first-time experience –
starting a new life or entering into another phase or level of life will always be a time of great
change, at the end of the day you will learn how to cope with these changes.

The ability to adjust to new situations or environments is an important phase in one’s

development. Changes may throw a person’s self-confidence off the usual balance and
adjustment means finding a new balance in the changed situation. Adaptation is successful

when the person has more (perceived) resources to cope with the situation than anxiety and
tension/stress.

Young people must take note and understand that everyone will at times go through
experiences in their life stages and will come across challenges in adapting to a new
environment, situations, or even system; however, when maintaining self-confidence and self-
acknowledgment it is possible to overcome any kind of obstacles. Even if you are not able to
cope with stress (study, work, relationships) it is important to know that you are not alone. Just
give (reach out) your hand and someone will hold it!

Government’s role in cultivating economic opportunities and minimizing youth

unemployment.

South African youth is now more worried about their future due corruption, unemployment and the
increasing stages of load shedding.
There is growing evidence that load shedding is undermining South Africa’s economic growth. The
economy is not only shedding jobs and employments, but also losing billions of rands owing to a
lack of productivity. A study conducted by the CSIR in 2019 estimated the cost of load shedding to
have been between R60 billion and R120 billion in that year alone. In 2023, the Minister of Energy
was reported to have said that load shedding “cost the country’s economy R1 billion per day.”

we are still dealing with fraud and corruption which seems to be an accepted practice, now there is
an increasing concern of load shedding and unemployment. While it's important to note that
financial fraud is not the sole factor responsible for unemployment, it can exacerbate the existing
challenges in the job market.
Although load shedding is primarily caused by electricity generation capacity, it is evident through
reports that Fraud and corruption has also indirectly contributed to load shedding making it difficult
to address this issue that we are experiencing because of unethical behaviors. The focus is to
ensure that government priorities the development of the country rather individuals focusing on
what they can benefit when they are in top government positions.
Regardless of all these challenges, there is still hope for a better future for the youth. South Africa’s
growing youth skills and unemployment divide can be bridged by employability and SME incubator
initiatives, but we need more corporate and government programmes that provide school leavers
with a platform to learn, make mistakes and grow. South Africa can improve its youth
unemployment crisis by providing support to SMEs on their crucial role in empowering youth while
growing the economy. SMEs can be the perfect hosts for youth employability programmes.”
