The initial conditions are now correctly set up, and any of the circuit setup procedures
given below can now be followed.
Setting up the MODICOM 3/2 Clock Generation Circuit

It is important that the VCO frequency in the CLOCK GENERATION CIRCUIT is

correctly adjusted. The procedure for doing this is as follows:

Turn the DC1 amplitude control on MODICOM 3/1 fully clockwise.

Turn the VCO FREQUENCY ADJUST preset control on MODICOM 3/2 until a
position is found where the SYNC. BIT COUNTER LED (in the SYNC. CODE
DETECTOR block of MODICOM 3/2) is fully on.

Turn the DC1 amplitude control fully counter-clockwise and check that the SYNC. BIT
COUNTER LED is still on. If the LED switches off, re-adjust the VCO FREQUENCY
ADJUST preset control until the LED stays on the full sweep of the DC1 amplitude
control.

The above procedure defines the capture range of the VCO. The VCO FREQUENCY
ADJUST preset control should not be moved once it has been correctly adjusted.

Setting up the MODICOM 3/1 A/D Converter

Connect a voltmeter between the spare CH.1 input socket on the MODICOM 3/1 board,
and 0V.

Monitor the D0 test point (tp22), in the MODICOM 3/1 A/D CONVERTER block,
with an oscilloscope.

Set up the MODICOM 3/1 A/D CONVERTER block by following the steps below:

a) Turn the DC1 preset counter-clockwise until the voltmeter reads exactly
-4.94 volts, and then adjust the OFFSET preset (on the MODICOM 3/1 board) until the
monitored signal just flickers between ‘1’ and ‘0’ states, with LEDs D6 through D1 (the
leftmost 6 LED’s) in the A/D CONVERTER block being in the off state.

b) Turn the DC1 preset clockwise until the voltmeter reads exactly
+4.90 volts, and then adjust the GAIN preset (on the MODICOM 3/1 board) until the
monitored signal just flickers between ‘1’ and ‘0’ states, with LED’s D6-D1 all in on
state.

c) Repeat step a.

d) Adjust the DC1 preset until the voltmeter reads exactly 0.00 volts, and check that the
bit pattern on the LEDs of the A/D CONVERTER block is:

D6 D6
1 0 0 0 0 0 0
where 0 = LED off, and 1 = LED on.

If any other bit pattern is displayed, repeat the whole of the above procedure.

Note: Due to the characteristics of the sample/hold circuit of the MODICOM 3/1 Transmitter,
switching between FAST and SLOW modes may cause a slight change in voltage at the
sample/hold output. This may result in an increase or decrease in the A/D Converter
code by one bit when the Transmitter is switched between FAST and SLOW modes.
Setting up the MODICOM 3/2 D/A Converter

First ensure that the MODICOM 3/1 A/D CONVERTER block is correctly set up, as
explained above.

Set up the MODICOM 3/2 D/A Converter by following the procedure below:

a) Turn the MODICOM 3/1 DC1 preset fully counter-clockwise so that the LEDs in the
MODICOM 3/2 D/A CONVERTER block are all off.

Monitor tp30 on the MODICOM 3/2 board with a digital voltmeter, and trim the
board’s OFFSET preset until the measured voltage is exactly
-5.00 volts.

b) Turn the MODICOM 3/1 DC1 preset fully clockwise so that the LEDs in the
MOCICOM 3/2 D/A CONVERTER block are all on.

Monitor tp30 on the MODICOM 3/2 board with the voltmeter, and trim the board’s
GAIN preset until the measured voltage is exactly +4.92 volts.

c) Repeat step a.
