DALI configuration options

Advantages, disadvantages
DALI config Advantage Disadvantage
Web-server • With WiFi – move around with laptop, smart • Ethernet connection (or cross-link
(DALI-config prior to ETS phone or tablet cable) required, optionally a WiFi-
config) • Synchronisation of the real DALI installation with router
the ETS plug-in -> easier ETS configuration (not
needed parameters and objects are hidden)

ETS • All configuration can be done ”offline” prior to the • No synchronisation with the ETS
(ETS-config prior to commissioning of the installation (exception: plug-in -> parameters and objects
DALI-config) configuration of colour control (DALI DT-8) in for all ECGs are visible
scenes)
• No need for Ethernet connection
Device Display • No PC required • Only for group control, not individual
(Installer option) • The installer can directly after installation address control of ECGs
all ECGs (and thereby check that all ECGs are
online) and also put them into correct groups.
• This option can also be used just to verify the
installation. The programmer can later redo the
DALI-config.

The plug-in can work in two different modes
> Normal mode (default after installation)
> This mode is to be used when DALI-configuration
is done via web-server (or device display)
Default Normal mode
> This modes allows to synchronise the plug-in with

Backup-/Restore of DALI configuration in the gateway
> It is possible to make a backup of the DALI-configuration,
scenes, effects and colour templates which are stored in
the gateway, to the PC in XML-format
Advantage – if the gateway has to be replaced the
configuration doesn’t have to be redone, but can be
restored from the backup file.
> During backup all configurations in the web server will be
reloaded in the plug-in.
> Configurations done in the plug-in which has not been
downloaded will therefore be overwritten
> If the user has made changes to scenes, effects or colour
templates in the web server, this is also the way to update the
plug-in (in extended mode) with actual data

NOTE1: It is not a backup of the DALI installation.

If a “New installation” or change of grouping is done by mistake,
restoring the backup will not restore information which are stored
in the ECGs (e.g. short addresses, group or scene belongings).

Which colours can be archived is depending
on the LED lamp
> On the market exists tuneable white LED modules which can also archive colors in the vicinity of the black body
line, which is usable for product display and effect lighting
> To set such colours the xy-coordinate color type is used, however due to the physical limitations of the LED
module not all colours in the xy colour space can be set
> See documentation from the manufacturer on limitations
> If coordinates outside of the supported range is used, it can lead to unexpected colours (doesn’t fit the colour
space diagram) and the same coordinates can give different results if repeated (depending on previous colour)
> As example, below extract from technical design guide of Tridonic TALEXengine STARK DLE Premium
(tuneable white LED module + ECG) which supports the colour type “colour temperature” and “xy-coordinate”.

> Colour Temperature method > xy-coordinate method

Colour control
Colour control options in the gateway
> The KNX standard is not yet ready
> KNX Data Point Type(s) to control colours is not yet defined in the KNX
standard, but work is ongoing
> Colour settings can therefore not be controlled from KNX directly
> New colour control functions can be configured either in the web-
server of the DALI-gateway or in the ETS plug-in
> Weekly schedulers (so called templates) can be configured to control
colour (and/or brightness)
> Templates can be enabled/disabled manually in the webserver/plug-in
> Templates can be enabled/disabled via the bus via the existing “Effect
object”
> Colour settings can now be included together with brightness level in
scenes via the integrated scene module
> Brightness control of the lights
> The brightness control of DT-8 lights is done from KNX via the switch,
dimming and value objects as any other lamp

DALI-gateway
Colour control is a tool which require knowhow in lighting
> The DALI-gateway with colour control is a tool to set and
adjust colours, but which colours or colour curves?
> This specific knowhow is the task for the lighting architects
> A big benefit with the web-server and easy user interface is
that lighting architects can make their settings without
technical knowhow (like ETS)
> With the user access level it is possible for the lighting
architect or end-user to setup color control templates and
scenes without the risk of changing the DALI addressing and
grouping (only possible with the admin access level)
> Check out the application note “AN037 Tuneable white” on
Schneider home page for more information about tuneable
white
