Alpha Grid Vocabulary

Goal: To build and review vocabulary.

How:
a. Materials
 Copies of alphabet grid (a box for each letter to write in vocabulary words)
 Copies of a text around a topic. You can choose a Science, Math, History, Social Studies,
Reading, or Writing text.

b. Process
 Give the alphabet grid to your tutee and work together to list as many words as possible
about the chosen topic.
 Write the words on a piece of paper.
 Write notes about the words.
 Share notes and answer questions about the topic chosen. For example, if you chose to
talk about Adolf Hitler, they can answer:
o Who was Hitler? What did you learn about him?
o How did he get his power?
 Revisit the alphabet sheet—how many of the words were in the selected text? What other
words were important that should be added to it?
 Keep this grid to add to as tutee reads along.
