1.) Kabanata XXII - Mga Liwanag at Dilim

Excerpt:

“Mga salitang malalambing pa kaysa pagaspas ng mga dahon at mababango pa

kaysa hanging puno ng halimuyak ng mga bulaklak ang namumutawi sa kanilang mga
labi.”

Annotation:

This shows how Maria Clara and Crisostomo Ibarra talks to each other when
they saw each other again after a long time. The flap of the leaves represent how
smooth they talk to each other while the air breeze that smells like flower shows how
sweet and how they love each other. In other words, the two talks to each other with so
much love being filled around them.

2.) Kabanata XXI – Kasaysayan ng isang Ina

Excerpt:

“Nanumbalik na muli sa puso ni Sisa ang pagtitiwala, at ipinagpatuloy ang

kanyang paglakad hanggang sa mapalapit sa mga sibil. Nag-anyong walang
napapansin at tumitingin-tungin sa ibang dako.”

Annotation:

Sisa was devastated because both of her children were caught by the civilians.
They were both accused of stealing something and they were about to be executed. In
this line, Sisa was trying to trust the people around her again after being so down
because of her children. Sisa tried to ignore the negativity around her even if it still
shows that she is scared. As we can also see here, she is trying to ignore those people
who were around her.
3.) Kabanata XXIX – Ang Umaga

Excerpt:

“”Ang magsaya ay di nangangahulugan ng paggawa ng mga kabaliwan.”, ang

itniugon ng matanda. “Iyan ang walang-saysay na paghahanda at pagsasayang
idinaraos taun-taon! At sa anong dahil? Lustayin ang salapi ay gayong karaming
karukhaan at pangangailangan. Natanto ko na, iyan ang pagpapakasagwa,
pagpapakalasing at karangyaang ginagawa upang payapain ang mga hinanaing ng
lahat,”

Annotation:

This was said by Pilosopo Tasyo when he was asked why he wasn’t preparing
for the gathering that is about to happen. What he have said was on point because in
our culture, even if we don’t have money or something, we can still afford to buy
unnecessary things and we just forget about the things that are more necessary. For
him spending too much for gatherings is just a waste of money especially when it
happens every year. And also he thinks that this kind of occasions only happen because
the people who lead them just want to stop people from complaining about the way they
lead and with this, people can be at peace for some time.

4.) Kabanata XL – Ang karapatan at ang Lakas

Excerpt:

“”Padre Kura”, ang sigaw sa kanya ng mga kastila, nguni’t hindi sila pinansin at
patakbo siyang nagtuloy sa bahay ni Kapitan Tiyago. Nakahinga siya nang makarating
doon, pagka’t nabanaagan niya sa nakapinid na bintana ang anino ni Maria Clara at ng
sa tiya Isabel, na noo’y may inilalagay sa mga tasa at kopa.”
Annotation:

Padre Salvi is always worried every time he’ll know that Maria Clara was with
Ibarra. Padre Salvi secretly loved Maria Clara that’s why he planned to frame Ibarra and
this is why he seems to be always worried every time they were together. Padre Salvi
was the one who took over Padre Damaso’s position as the town’s priest.

5.) Kabanata XLI – Dalawang Dalaw

Excerpt:

“”Wala kayong panahon ngayon. Ginoo?” ang may sama ng loob na tanong ni
Lucas na humadlang sa binata. “Wala ba kayong panahon na maiuukol sa mga patay?”.
“Magabalik kayo rito ngayong hapon.” Ang pagtitimping ulit ni Ibarra. “Kailangan ko
ngayong dumalaw sa isang maysakit.”. “A, at dahil sa isang maysakit ay nalilimutan
niyo ang mga patay?” Ipinalalagay ba ninyong pagka’t kami’y mahirap ay--?”. Tinitigan
siya ni Ibarra na pumatlang ng ganito. “huwag sana ninyong ubusin ang aking
pasensiya”, at nagpatuloy na sa paglakad.”

Annotation:

Because of the fight that have happened, Two civilians were executed and later
on, a visitor came to Ibarra’s house to ask for some money for the family that those Two
civilians have left but Ibarra was in a hurry because Elias, the pilot told him that Maria
Clara was sick, that’s why he told his visitor to come back in the afternoon. This shows
that he really loves Maria Clara and that no matter what the situation is, he will always
prioritized Maria Clara.
