Viran a/l Nagappan v Deepa a/p Subramaniam

The appellant (Viran) and the respondent (Deepa) contracted a civil marriage in the
year of 2003 under the Law Reform (Marriage & Divorce) Act 1976 (‘LRA’). They
had two children out of the said marriage, a daughter and a son. In 2012, the appellant
had converted into Islam and changed his name to Izwan bin Abdullah. Later in 2013,
the appellant had registered the conversion of his kids to Islam . Upon his conversion
to Islam, he applied to the Seremban Syariah High Court for the dissolution of his
civil marriage with his ex-wife (respondent). The Syariah High Court issued an
application for the closure of the civil marriage on the basis of S. 46(2) of Islamic
Family Law(Negeri Sembilan) 2003 Law (Enactment 2003).
