ARE SCHOOL UNIFORMS IMPORTANT?

School uniforms have been a part of the lives of many students. From the moment we
start their day at school and until our class ends we all wear our uniforms. As an Atenean, it
is a basic necessity for us to wear our uniforms because it promotes our identity and our
mission as a whole. The logo from our uniform signifies our goal to do all things for the
greater glory of God. It has been always there in every achievement we have in school and it
symbolizes that as we achieve something let us take a moment to be grateful to the one who
molded us and helped us attain our success. It has witnessed all our struggles and how we
were able to fight all of them. For me, the moment I had my uniform in my arms I had felt the
sense of fulfillment being able to study in one of the respected schools in Western Visayas.
That is why my uniform is one of my inspiration to do well in my school. School uniforms are
important because it doesn’t bring peer pressure, helps create a positive learning
environment, and brings equality on the socioeconomic status of students.

School uniforms doesn’t bring peer pressure to students because according to

Spencer(2013), “a uniform means students don’t have to worry about peer pressure when it
comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look
like isn’t so important.” This means that when students wear uniforms they will not worry
about what to wear thus avoiding competitions between students. It will also help parents
avoid being financially pressured because their children will not always buy the latest trend
for them to fit in with their other colleagues. It will also prevent bullying because bullies will
not insult their schoolmates for they are all dressed the same.

School uniforms helps create a positive learning environment because according to

Adkins(2015), “School uniforms help create a positive learning environment, because it
removes distractions.” This means that if students wear their uniform they will be
concentrated into doing their tasks because if they are allowed to wear whatever they want
they will most likely talk about it the whole day telling their classmates about where did they
bought it or what brand it is and how much does it cost. It will help students to be focused on
their discussions and not on their attires making them absorb all the ideas and facts that is
given to them. The students will also feel the essence of formality if they use their uniforms.

School uniforms brings equality on the socioeconomic status of students because

according to Perez(2017),” When school uniforms are required, all students are expected to
dress the same, regardless of their style preferences or socioeconomic status.” This means that
even if you are born with a golden spoon or not, students are expected to respect each other
because in school, the students are taught that no one is superior among them regardless of their
class or position in the society. Wearing their uniforms will prevent envy among students because
they will learn how to appreciate each others’ life and status. Just like us in Ateneo, we have
classmates who are scholars that were given the opportunity to study in our school because of
their dedication in the studies and we always make sure that they always belong in our family and
they will not be left behind because if students respects and understands their colleagues they
tend to have a relationship which is stronger and lasts long.

 All students are given the chance to express their individuality because it makes them who
they are but there are just instances wherein one would criticize that person’s uniqueness. The
purpose of our uniforms is to instill to all of us that the institution we are attending promotes the
enhancement of our abilities and skills and give us more knowledge for us to reach greater
heights in the future. And for us to avoid being judged for expressing who we are, our uniforms
will help us see each others as equal and students who are aiming for one goal and that is to
become the better versions of themselves. For us to make school a more conducive place for
learning let us celebrate being one and help one another in enriching our talents and skills. And
lastly, I would like to recommend that schools should let students wear uniforms for them to avoid
joining groups that involves violence. Crimes nowadays are very rampant and their uniforms
would remind the students to be careful of their actions because if they are caught by the
authorities in doing something that is against the law it will not only affect the student but the
school as well. By wearing our uniforms, we uphold the name of our school and we must wear it
appropriately.
