Experiment No. 1 - Test on vapour compression test rig

AIM:

 To determine the actual and theoretical COP of refrigeration test rig working on vapour
compression cycle
 To plot the refrigeration cycle on P-h chart
 To study various components and controls used in vapour compression cycle

 1- About the experiment:

 This test is performed on VCC test rig using R134a refrigerant. The system
is consider in steady state. Hermitically sealed compressor is used to
compress the refrigerant and take electricity as input power. Work done is
measured with the help of energy meter and refrigerating effect is heat
removed from water. The low temperature refrigerant flow lines are insulted
to avoid any heat gain from surrounding environment. The actual and
theoretical COP of system is calculated and compared. Actual COP is
always less than theoretical COP.

Calculations: Actual refrigeration effect: …………………….W

= 5*4.187*(28-8)

Actual refrigeration effect= 0.6978 Kw …………(A)

Actual Compressor work =

= 1000*3600*10

3200*22

Actual Compressor work= 0.5113 Kw …………..(B)

Actual coefficient of performance = A/B

= (0.6978/0.5113)

Actual COP = 1.36

Theoretical coefficient of performance =

= 2.4

h1= enthalpy of the refrigerant at the inlet of the compressor= 380 kJ/kg

h2= enthalpy of the refrigerant at the outlet of the compressor= 430 kJ/kg

h3= enthalpy of the refrigerant after condensation = 260 kJ/kg

h4= enthalpy of the refrigerant after expansion = 260 kJ/kg

Result Table:

1 Capacity of the system 0.199 Ton

2 Actual COP 1.36
3 Theoretical COP 2.4

CONCLUSION:

1) The actual COP of system is always less than theoretical COP due to various
frictional and thermal losses.

2) To reduce the thermal losses the refrigerant flow lines at low temperature are
insulated.
