SECTION 3 DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA FOR SEWERAGE

SYSTEM

3.1 REFERENCE

3.1.1 The design of the sewerage system shall refer to the following manuals,
guidelines and standards:

(a) Sewerage Manual Part 1, Key Planning Issues and Gravity

Collection System, Third Edition, May 2013;

(b) Sewerage Manual Part 2, Pumping Stations and Rising Mains,

Second Edition, May 2013;

(c) Guidelines for Estimating Sewage Flows for Sewage

Infrastructure Planning; and

(d) Cap 123I - Building (Standards Of Sanitary Fitments,

Plumbing, Drainage Works And Latrines) Regulations.

3.2 GENERAL

3.2.1 The sewerage system shall be capable of meeting the peak flow
condition without surcharge and overflow.

3.3 MINIMUM VELOCITY

3.3.1 Self-cleansing for small diameter sewers of diameter less than 300mm
shall be achieved by ensuring either that a velocity of at least 0.7m/s
occurs daily, or that a gradient of at least 1: DN (i.e. Nominal diameter of
the sewer in mm) is specified, provided that a flow of 2 Average Dry
Weather Flow (ADWF) is assumed to occur at least once daily.

3.3.2 For larger diameter sewers, higher minimum velocities shall be used
particularly if relatively coarse sediment is expected to be present.
Sewers of diameter up to 900mm shall be designed to achieve a self-
cleansing velocity of 1.0 m/s in full pipe condition.

3.3.3 It is required to have self-cleansing conditions attained at least at times

of daily peak flow.

Contract 3303 - Particular Specification AA 03/09/18

Appendix F – Particular Technical Specification 4
Part F1.2 – Design and Performance Criteria for Utility
Hydraulic Services
3.4 MAXIMUM VELOCITY

3.4.1 The maximum velocity at peak flow shall be limited to 3 m/s.

3.5 JUNCTION OF DRAINS

3.5.1 The junction of every other branch drain with another drain shall be made
within a manhole, obliquely at an angle of not more than 600 in the
direction of flow of such other drain, and shall be above the invert of such
other drain.

3.6 MANHOLE

3.6.1 Manholes should be provided at:

(a) Intersection of sewers;

(b) Junctions between different sizes/gradients of sewers; and

(c) Locations where the sewer changes direction.

3.6.2 Backdrop manholes shall be used to connect sewers at significantly

different levels and shall be used where the level difference is greater
than 600 mm. The backdrop can be provided by means of:

(a) A vertical drop in the form of a downpipe constructed

inside/outside the wall of a manhole; and

(b) A gradual drop in the form of cascade.

3.7 SEWAGE PUMPING STATION

3.7.1 Standby capacity is required so that should any of the pumps in the
station be inoperable due to routine maintenance or pump failure, the
operation of the station can still be maintained.

3.7.2 The volume between top water level and bottom water level for a single
pump operation is given by the following equation: V = 900Q/N

where V = control volume in litres

Q = pump capacity in litres per second
N = allowable number of starts of pump per hour

3.8 RISING MAIN

3.8.1 Twin or multiple rising mains shall be provided.

Contract 3303 - Particular Specification AA 03/09/18

location should be chosen carefully, taking into account the final
discharge point of sewage.

3.8.3 Air relief valves shall be installed at locations of minimum pressure. Air
is sucked in the air relief valve when the pipe internal pressure is below
atmospheric. Upon subsequent pressure rise, the admitted air is then
forced out. They shall be installed at convex points of the pipeline (i.e.
local high points).

3.9 THRUST BLOCK DESIGN
