Weekend update
More than 20 years ago, WOOD® magazine’s
then-sister publication, Weekend Woodworking
Projects, printed plans for a dovetailed jewelry
box I designed. I’m still making those boxes, but
the design has evolved to include a wooden catch
and hinges, among other details.
—Richard Gagne
Strafford, N.H.

Long-time readers will find Richard’s original design

in issue 48 (November 1995) of WWP. Or you can
download a free PDF of the plan at woodmagazine

Dave, first of all, I’m sorry for your loss (Taking
Measure, issue 251, December/January 2017/2018).
You mentioned including all 21 empty shell
casings in the flag case commemorating your late
father-in-law. However, like the rifle volleys they
came from, only three are required: one each for
duty, honor, and country.

stretchers, David substituted pegged through-
mortise-and-tenon joints for the specified
nuts and bolts. Mortises in the benchtop
accept tenons on the tops of the legs. None of
the joints are glued, so he can break down the
bench, if needed. He also added a leg vise, and
drawers that open from either side of the
bench to store hand tools and accessories.
David gets great satisfaction using tradi-
tional hand tools whenever he can. Still, as
you look around the shop, you will see a
router table, 12" planer, and drill press and a
few benchtop tools including a spindle
sander, 4" jointer, belt/disc sander, and mor-
tising machine.
An in-wall air conditioner keeps things
comfortable in hot weather. In cooler tem-
peratures, a small plug-in heater helps, but
“leaves a lot to be desired,” Dave says.

The planer, mounted to a flip-top stand, tucks away

below a worksurface. On the wall above, a saw till holds
handsaws and other hand tools.

12 WOOD magazine May 2018

A 15'-long worksurface lines an entire wall of David’s shop. It provides a sturdy base
for a machinist’s vise, plus plenty of storage. His most-often-used tools hang on nails or custom
brackets on the plywood-faced walls.

Plywood lining the shop walls makes it

easy to hang tools, templates, and other
accessories. Looking ahead, he hopes to
panel the ceiling to provide a more finished
appearance.

For the longest-lasting exterior protection, choose a heavily pigmented, film-forming finish such as paint (center) or opaque stain. Spar or marine varnishes (right)
form water-shedding films, but have few UV-blocking pigments, so they require regular—often annual—sanding and reapplication. Oil finishes (left) don’t form a
significant film. Plus, they require yearly reapplication, but no sanding, and give wood a natural look.

Quickly gauge the ideal hole size for any dowel
Depending on the application, dowels sometimes need to fit tightly (for joinery) or loosely (for
example, when used as axles). And, unfortunately, dowels don’t always match their stated diameters.
As a result, I used to find myself making a number of test holes to determine a dowel’s best fit.
Those days are over for me, and now for you, too!
Gather your drill bits, order them by size (I include numbered and lettered bits to give me as
many choices as possible) and make a test board from Baltic-birch plywood. Lightly chamfer each
hole so you can easily slide in a dowel and check its fit.

A great route for routing straight edges
Some of us don’t have a jointer for machining straight edges on boards. If you’re in that club,
like me, you have probably screwed or clamped a straightedge to a board and jointed the
edge with a flush-trim bit in a router. That’s nothing new. But after doing it that way, I
wanted a faster method that doesn’t leave marks or holes in the board.
So I routed a series of parallel keyhole slots in a length of 1⁄2" medium-density
fiberboard. To several of the slots I added a small base, toggle clamp, T-bolt, and
knob (hardware available at woodmagazine.com/jointjig). Now, I can quickly
clamp down a workpiece of most any size and rout straight edges easily.

Machinery, radio, or TV noise can make it
hard to hear a cell phone. I’ve found that a
coffee can nicely amplifies the notification
sound, and, as a bonus, protects the device
from dust.

SHOP TIPS
10 seconds to a dead-square drill-press table
Magnetic digital angle gauges, that work so well for setting a tablesaw’s
blade angle, make easy work of adjusting a drill-press table square to its
chuck. Simply attach the gauge to the chuck and press the zero key.
Then, set the gauge on the drill-press table and adjust the table until the
gauge reads 90°. That’s it. Now drill holes, confident they will be exactly
90° to the face of the workpiece.

CNC Work Six ways to hold work solidly

they don’t provide any clue that a workpiece will come loose from its worksurface
until it happens. And then you have a minor disaster. For success—and safety—always
firmly secure the workpiece; your grippy router mat simply won’t do the job. These six tested
techniques ensure that workpieces stay put on a CNC machine.

Screws
You can screw the workpiece to a wooden
table, if the design allows. Include the screw
locations in your design and create a sepa- Screw holes

antees they stay clear of the cutter while
machining the design.
Run only the tool path for the screw holes,
using a V-bit with a 1⁄8"-deep cut to mark the
screw locations [Photos E, F]. Without moving
the workpiece, drill the screw holes and
screw the workpiece to the table.

D
When laying out your design, include locations for hold-down screws. Here they are placed in a waste area that gets
trimmed away later. If this were not waste, they could become mounting holes for the plaque.

E F
Secure your workpiece with painter’s tape to run the tool path for the screw locations. Mark the screw locations with plunge cuts straight into the work. Without any lateral force,
painter’s tape provides plenty of holding power.

Double-faced tape
Double-faced tape works fine for light-duty
cuts, such as 3D carving and lettering [Photo
G, Sources]. For maximum tape grip, make
certain the spoil board and workpiece are
flat and free of dust. You’ll probably have to
pry your work from the spoil board after
completing the cuts, so don’t try this with
delicate pieces.

Hotmelt glue
This adhesive applied to all four edges has
enough holding power for even the most
aggressive cuts [Photo H]. But applying it and
waiting for it to cool takes more time than
other hold-down methods.
After completing the CNC cut, slice
through the glue with a utility knife to
release the workpiece. Before mounting
your next workpiece, clean glue residue
from the workpiece and spoil board with a
sharp chisel .

When gluing up thin frames, elevate the parts on spacers to center them top to bottom within the clamp’s corner

we answer, you need to know how different
attributes of a bandsaw blade affect the cut.
Bandsaw blades differ in thickness, width,
length, and tooth configuration. Length var-

width: Smaller machines (9–12" wheels) need
thinner blades to prevent breaking the welds.
They also accept only narrow blades, often 1⁄2"

Blades come primarily in the four tooth

deliver a smoother cut. Choosing a blade’s

Ultrathin resawing blades have only slight tooth set, creating a much smoother cut (left) than blades with regular tooth

Yes, you can make most cuts with one blade

Every time you change from one bandsaw blade width to another, you have to reset the saw’s
tracking, tension, and blade guides. That process can take 15–30 minutes, depending on
your saw. So we understand that you might not want to do that very often. It’s the same
reason a lot of people use a 40- or 50-tooth combo blade for all cuts on their tablesaw, or the
same speed setting for all bits on their drill press. We get it, change is hard.
So, is there a combo-blade equivalent for bandsaws? We say “yes.” (Purists, shudder now!)

In search of the best entry-level

Turn a Woven Bowl
Learn how to cut and glue up airtight segmented rings to weave this optical illusion.

W
hile this is a turning project, plenty of woodworking happens long before switch-
ing on the lathe. Gluing together five rings with segments that alternate horizontal
and vertical grain creates the appearance of overlapping wood strips. A thin layer
of veneer on top of four of the rings looks like a gap between the rows. Getting all these
pieces milled and glued together in the right sequence begins with accurate cuts, so let’s start
by checking tools for precision.

Tuned tools provide precise cuts C
(Blank before turning)

When cutting segments to form a ring, the slightest deviation from the needed angle gets
multiplied during assembly. Segments must meet tightly in both horizontal and vertical
planes to prevent gaps.
Gain the needed precision by trueing up your tablesaw, bandsaw, and disc sander with
tests that magnify tiny errors so you can observe and correct them. For each test, prepare
stock with parallel edges and faces, and edges square to the faces. D D

At the bandsaw, use a square to verify that the rip fence rests square to the table. Then, guide a workpiece along the
fence and cut about 1⁄16" deep into the end. Turn the saw off, and flip the workpiece over keeping the same face against
the fence. Butt it against the rear of the blade to check how the kerf aligns with the blade. Adjust the table tilt as needed.

For the disc sander, guide two identical-width scraps with the miter gauge and sand the ends. Flip one scrap edge for edge, and place them against a straightedge, such as your
tablesaw rip fence. Any gap from top to bottom indicates the table tilt needs adjustment. For a gap widening from edge to edge, adjust the angle of the miter gauge.

Smooth-sliding mitersaw
makes cutting a pleasure
10" sliding compound mitersaw, no. 26-2240, $600
The Cruzer looks like a prop from a science-
fiction movie, but it’s actually a great mitersaw.
Its super-smooth articulated-arm mechanism
slides like a dream. And it fits nicely up against
a wall with the saw retracted, eliminating the
deep space that most rail sliders require.
With a top-mounted belt-driven motor, the
blade tilts left and right with seven positive
stops and a rear scale that’s actually easy to
read. I like that the bevel lock is located at the
front of the saw for easy access. And its miter
range impresses too: up to 60° right and 50° left,
with 10 stops.
The Cruzer has the capacity you’d expect in a
10" slider, with the ability to crosscut a 2×12". Its
aluminum table/base provides plenty of work-
piece support, although side extensions would
be nice. The sliding top portions of each fence
allow clearance for tilting the saw.
But I do wish the blade guard would stay
retracted when changing blades. It’s a hassle to
do a task requiring three hands with only two.

A job-site saw worthy of a workshop

10" tablesaw on stand, no. C10RJ, $480
Hitachi’s tablesaw scores high marks where it counts most. It
has lots of power—we had to get really aggressive to bog it
down. And the best feature: rip capacity. The rack-and-pinion
fence accommodates rips as wide as 35" to the right of the
blade and 22" to the left—greatest among job-site and bench-
top saws. When you move the fence to the right—off the
table—you can flip it 90° to provide a ledge for workpiece
support. An outfeed extension provides up to 9" of workpiece
support.
A built-in brake stops the blade within a couple of seconds
at shutdown. The C10RJ’s riving knife and blade-guard
assembly work well without being obtrusive. Blade changes,
height adjustments, and blade tilts are all easily done. The
stand unfolds simply for a stable footprint, and it has a leveler
built into one leg.
