Duties and Responsibilities of a Midwife
○ During Pregnancy
- Educates pregnant women about what's going on with their bodies and their babies.
- Examines the mother when necessary and monitors fetal growth through the mother’s belly
measurements.
- Teaches patients pain-management techniques so they are prepared when labor begins.
- When she suspects trouble with the babies or the mothers, refers the patients to an
obstetrician for medical intervention.
- Refers all pregnant women to a health facility for delivery.
○ After Birth
- Teaches the mothers the basics of newborn care and breastfeeding
- Offers emotional support through the postpartum time.
○ Encodes data of pregnant and postpartum mothers, women of reproductive age, newborn and
children to the IClinicSystem of the Department of Health.
○ Records and reports important data of pregnant and postpartum mothers, women of reproductive
age, newborn and children to the Individual Treatment Record, Target Client List, Summary Table and
Monthly Consolidation Form for the Electronic Field Health Service Information System reporting.
○ Serves as a treatment partner for the patients with Tuberculosis and Multi Drug Resistant
Tuberculosis.
○ Does case finding of patients with Tuberculosis and Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis.
○ Reports patient with communicable diseases for the Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and
Response.
○ Interviews and registers patients with Non-Communicable diseases (e.g. Hypertension and Diabetes)
and dispenses necessary medicines.
○ Administers vaccines to eligible newborn and children on a routine basis.
○ Interviews, examines, administers family planning methods and does health teachings to women of
reproductive age as well as to their partners.
○ Validates reports of Barangay Health Workers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars monthly.
