Introduction to Scilab and its benefits

Silde1

 Introduction
 Scilab Spoken tutorials
 Textbook companion
 Lab Migration

Slide2 FOSS: Free and Open Source Software

 Commercial software can be very expensive

 Heavy penalties if unauthorised software is used by industry
 Our SME’s don’t use ANY software:
 Commercial software is expensive
 They are not aware of open source software
If not used then our small companies will not be competitive
 There is no alternative to FOSS

Slide3

Why FOSS should be used?

 It is free of cost
 It is affordable to industry
 It allows learners to become better programmers (auto mechanics)

Open source software makes available the code students can see them open them modify
them and inprove them , think them.

 It can grow through the collaborative contribution

Does it mean we should not use the proprietary software???? Of course we should

 Use proprietary software only when absolutely necessary

Slide 4 Problems with open source software

 Good documents are missing

 Lack of support
 Wrong impression about the quality

Slide5 Scilab: A FOSS alternative to Matlab

 Scilab is an excellent open source software

Slide6
 Free and open source software
 A good substitute for Matlab
 About 95% compatibility
 Xcos is a good alternative to simulink
Xcos comes free of cost with scilab

Slide7

 Excellent computation environment

 LINPACK, EISPACK, LAPACK
 Also, DASSL,ODEPACK, etc.
All are excellent computational environments. These are also used in MATLAB.
Because these are outstanding numerical computational engine. Scilab is reliable.

Slide 8 How reliable is Scilab

 CNES: Arianne rockets

CNES is French Aerospace Corporation. It has helped us to launch many of our
satellites. It launches Arianne rockets.
 Recent GSAT-16 Launch by Arianne
Our GSAT-16 is launced by Arianne. Launched successfully
 CNES relies on Scilab for many critical calculations:
trajectory, flight dynamics, orbit
 Talk by T Martin of CNES on Scilab
First Scilab user conference is held on 1st July 2009

Slide9 Few More examples of Scilab use

It is used to study Flight dynamics, Diesel engine

Lecture II 8 Minutes
Slide1 2. Spoken tutorial

 10 minute long audio-video tutorial

 On open source software
 To improve employment potential
 Created for self learning
 Audio dubbed into all 22 languages
 Offline version available (reach=100 times)
Released as a open sourse under CC-BY-SA
25 Scilab Spoken tutorials are available
They are in English and can be downloaded from IIT website absolutely free.
He showed how to open and play the open tutorials in different languages.
He asked to keep open scilab software and spoken tutorial side by sidet. Adjust the
window view to watch video and listen spoken tutorial and try it out accordingly in
scilab software as per instructions given .if work go to next command if not revise in
spoken tutorial. No log in is needed .login is there to participate in forum

Slide2 2. Spoken tutorial

No need to login

Created for self learning

Available in 22 langauges even in Sanskrit too. He asked, if interested try in Sanskrit too.

Slide3. Spoken tutorials are MOOCs

 Many universities are using spoken tutorials as MOOCs

Lecture III: Amazing resourse of Scilanb Textbook Companion

Slide1: Open Source software: Main Problem, another solution

 Good documents are missing.

Problem is good documents are missing. So solution is here.

 Second solution:

Textbook Companion (TBC)

Slide2. 3Textbook Companion (TBC)

 Students are good in coding , not in documenting.

 India has about 10+ lakh engineering students every year.
Can we use students to create the documents? It is seen that students are good in
coding but they don’t like to documentation. But as we want documentation. It was
decided to address this by solving the inverse problem. What is inverse problem? It
is, ask students to write code for existing documents such as solved examples in the
standard text books.
 Ask them to write scilab code for solved examples of the standard textbooks.
He highlighted “ Solved examples from text books as text books provide steps and is
helpful to work with Scilab”.
 1 book=1 TBC
 We pay Rs. 12000 /TBC as honorarium, certificate and link etc.
Funding for this comes from national mission on education through ICT MHRD.
He invited student to contribute to this and use this TBC.

Slide4. Extent of ScilabTBC

 1000 college students and faculty contributed.

 600 text books are coded
 70000 examples coded.

He said, You can download this TBC for offline use through following website:

Slide 5: Download Scilab TBC for offline use

He showed how to access the offline TBC

He said, It is trademark of inria and Scilab enterprises and is now brought over by a
company. Completed books completed 594 book that have been completed. He showed how to
search book of particular specialization. Here code will be given but not book. Example
given is electrical engineering, Signal Processing, 17 books of DSP.To understand the code
book is needed. You can download entire scilab code in Zip file as well as scilab code in pdf
format.

 Can download the code for entire book

 Or a chapter

He showed how to run code in Scilab from TBC zip files. We can get code for one example
too.

 Or a example.

Slide 6. Demo of Scilab cloud on GARUDA

http://cloud.scilab.in/
He gave demo of scilab cloud on GARUDA.
He shoed that Information is arranged in Main category sub category etc.
GARUDA cloud is hosted in Bangalore by CDAC.

Slide7. Extent of use

If book is not covered in the TBC you can propose or ask your smart classmate to create TBC
for you.

 Documentation

While teaching in class can be used. If not online, offline version can be used.
