What is SIGTRAN?

■ Signalling Transport (SIGTRAN) is a set of standards defined by

the International Engineering Task Force [IETF]

■ The SIGTRAN protocols specify the means by which SS7

messages can be reliably transported over IP networks.

■ SIGTRAN is an acronym for;

“SS7 over IP Signalling Transport & SCTP”

The SIGTRAN Standard

■ Signaling Transport (SIGTRAN) is an Internet Engineering Task

Force (IETF) standard for transporting SS7 traffic over IP
networks.

■ SIGTRAN defines a modular structure that uses a common reliable

transport protocol and allows the definition of adaptation modules
for different PSTN control protocols.

■ SCTP supports node-to-node transport of SS7/ISDN traffic

between Signaling Gateways (SGs)/Media Gateways (MGs) and
Media Gateway Controllers (MGCs).

Interfaces – SIGTRAN

■ The SIGTRAN stack supports the following signalling

protocols and versions, all of which have been extensively
tested in network scenarios:

 SCTP - RFC 2960,3309

 http://tools.ietf.org/wg/tsvwg/
 M3UA - RFC 3332
 http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3332

What is SIGTRAN used for?

■ SIGTRAN allows Operators to migrate towards an All-IP Network.

■ It can provide the ‘bridge’ between SS7 & IP for traffic in

Operators Fixed and Mobile SS7 Networks.

■ The transport protocol, Stream Control Transmission Protocol

(SCTP), allows carriers to use the IP infrastructure to transport
SS7 telephony traffic over an IP network.

■ Other frameworks such as H.323, MGCP, H.248/MEGACO, SIP and

3G. are also supported.

SIGTRAN Protocol

■ The SIGTRAN protocols provide all functionality

needed to support SS7 signaling over IP
networks, including:

 flow control

 in-sequence delivery of signaling messages within a single

control stream

 identification of the originating and terminating signaling

points

 identification of voice circuits

SIGTRAN Protocol

 error detection, retransmission and other error correcting

procedures

 recovery from outages of components in the transit path

 controls to avoid congestion on the IP networks

 detection of the status of peer entities

(e.g., in service, out-of-service, etc.)
