Module 1: Introduction to Technology for Teaching and Learning
Lesson 1. Definition of Basic Concepts
Lesson 2. Roles of ICT in Teaching and Learning
I. What is this Lesson About?
This lesson focuses on the definition of the basic technology-related concepts
used in teaching and learning as well as the roles of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning.
II. What will you learn?
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
 define basic concepts in understanding ICT in education; and
 identify the roles of ICT in education.
III. Let’s Try This.
A. Self-check. As a future teacher, are you ready for a more ICT-driven and
responsive classroom? Assess yourself through the Basic ICT Readiness

Guide Questions:
1. How does the checklist perceive “readiness”?
It exhibits the basics fundamentals associated in the new teaching-
learning mode and the use of ICT in the new-normal teaching learning.

2. Count the number of check mark you got. Out of 25, what is your score?
25

3. Based on the source of the checklist the test has a predetermined pass mark in
the range of 17–19 out of 25. Do you agree with the result? Does it really
describe how “ready” you are?
Yes, the checklist shows the essential basic with the technology related
concepts, I can say based on my own experience that these tasks are essential
to the new teaching-learning mode in this new-normal and can determine
whether how ready I am.

B. First Impressions. How do you understand the following commonly used

terms in 21st century education? Write a short definition (1-2 sentences) on
the space provided.
Technology Any machinery or equipment developed to ease
or make life easier. Technology deals with

Now, may I share to you the definitions provided by different authors and
sources. You can compare these definitions with the ones you have written in the
previous activity.

definition linked to the etymology of the term from the Greek-techne, or skill, and logos

VI. Let’s Read

Roles‌‌and‌‌Practices‌‌of‌‌Educators‌‌in‌‌Technology-Supported‌‌Learning‌ ‌

 The use of technology in teaching and learning can actualize the full meaning of
the learner-centered paradigm where both the teacher and student can become
learning partners who are actively involved in designing the learning experience.
 The roles of educators can indeed evolve and expand with the integration of
technology. Here are some reasons why as documented by US Dept. of
Education, Office of Educational Technology (2017)
1. Educators can collaborate far beyond the walls of their schools.
2. Educators can design highly engaging and relevant learning experiences
through technology.
3. Educators can lead the evaluation and implementation of new technologies
for learning.
4. Educators can be guides, facilitators, and motivators of learners.
5. Educators can be co-learners with students and peers.
6. Educators can become catalyst to serve the underserved. (Teachers can be
more creative and flexible in reaching out to students with different needs and
learning resources. This will hopefully lessen the gap brought by the digital divide or
the issue on access to technology)

VII. Feedback

The 21st century is characterized by the strong presence and influence of

technology. Its impact is especially evident in education with learners becoming more
and more immersed in its use in their daily lives. Technology is definitely going to be a
crucial part of the teaching and learning experience as it is here to stay. Therefore,
teachers must be able to adopt principles and practices that can maximize the

integration and use of technology in their
classes to make their lessons more relevant, meaningful and engaging.

As pre-service teachers, you are expected to develop and demonstrate skills on

the positive use of technology for your future classroom. While ICT helps to facilitate
teaching and learning with all its benefits and promises, you must remember that it
cannot replace your indispensable role in the process.

VII. Let’s Reflect

How is the use of technology in education beneficial during this time of
pandemic?

This pandemic caused us a great amount of change in our lifestyles, and with
that being said our daily activities from home to school and work are greatly affected.
Our actions are limited than what it is before, we can’t go outside, we can’t mingle with
our friends/classmates basically we are not allowed for mass gathering, which dealt a
great change on what was we called normal.
In terms of education we are far beyond to what system we are comfortable with,
some students and professors still want real-time face to face interaction and meeting
for better learning, I myself want it too, but this pandemic is causing us a real hindrance
yet is also giving us room for improvising and explore other was of being creative and
learning something new.
Most of us are knowledgeable when it comes to technology we are now in a
generation where we connect digitally and by the use of internet so let’s not take the
use of technology a drag or to make learning slow and inconsistent, technology by far,
is our best option to continue education and pursue success. Technology offers us lots
and lots of ways to communicate and inform each other. Through it uses technology can
make learning better. Technology tools make it easy for students and professors to
obtain reading materials and modules and not have any difficulty to handwritten or the
use of typewriter, we can easily gather information by integrating media as mediums to
send info as well as instructions.
The only consequence of technology use in in education is that the socio
economic status of students and the topographical features where the student resides,
but still technology has lots of ways other than the use of smart phones, laptops,
computer and internet, we can still have a bridge of connection through text messages
by obtaining a simcard from a telecommunication service, we can listen to radio
broadcasts, and we can still have access to television and free airing of channels.
Filipinos are known for resiliency and flexibility in all aspects and downsides
when it comes to life. We can create ways to improvise, make ways, and be creative in
our own styles, and with trying our best we can do what we want to do “Kung ayaw may
dahilan, kung gusto merong palaging paraan” Antukin by Rico Blanco.
