Acid reflux (GERD) causes and symptoms

About- Acid reflux also known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease


(GERD) is a digestive disease in which backflow of stomach acid irritates the
food pipelining (esophagus).

Symptoms-
 Heartburn, usually after eating
 Chest pain
 Difficulty swallowing
 Regurgitation
 Bad breath
 Sour taste
 A sensation of a lump in the throat
 Vomiting
 Breathing problems

Causes-
GERD occurs due to malfunctioning of the lower oesophageal sphincter. The
common risk factors include
Obesity
Stress
A hiatus hernia
Consuming particular foods like carbonated beverages, coffee, and
chocolate etc.
Drinking certain beverages, such as alcohol, or coffee
Certain medications, such as aspirin
Pregnancy
Connective tissue disorders, such as scleroderma
Delayed stomach emptying
Smoking (active or passive)
Low levels of physical exercise

Complications
 Oesophageal Stricture
 Oesophageal ulcer
 Barrett's oesophagus
