Dear Mother:

Your letter and the gloves returned was received

Friday. I was surprised at first that you took the in-
definite sentence on Postal Card in such earnest as to
expect me home at once.

Since writing the above I've been to Church and remained

after Church and had a talk with Mr. Levitt, the result
of which has changed my future life as I signed
a contract which I again write to give it additional
strength:

Chicago Feby 18th 1877 This night I consecrate myself,

with His help, to Christ.
J. H. Fisher

I am determined to abide by the above knowing that

if I do Christ will do the rest. Oh my Mother pray
more earnestly than ever for your Hughes for he will
need much strength! It may be years before I am
aware of being a Christian but by the grace of God I
will persevere if I never know. I can but be lost!
If I "come home" this Spring I will be there in about 2 weeks
from Wednesday as I will go to the Inaugeration. Lovingly Your Son
Hughes
