Portico e-Journals Holdings

as of 08/07/2020

Portico aims to be transparent about its procedures and policies and what content has been preserved. We have received
requests for information about the Portico holdings from librarians, as they cancel their print subscriptions and dispose of
old volumes to free up shelf space. This spreadsheet details the exact volumes and issues in the Portico archive as of the
date indicated above. Portico processes content in several ways - we typically have a set of historical content to preserve
and also received content in an ongoing manner as it is published. Depending upon the complexity of the data formats
involved, the back content may be processed into the Portico archive in discrete chunks which may not necessarily match
the chronological publishing order of the content (for example, Portico may process and preserve a very early issue of a
journal on the same day we process and preserve a much later issue and we may not process additional content for that
title for some time afterward).

Once the tools for processing any given publisher are complete, the ongoing content is processed as it arrives at Portico
and titles still in publication should have content added to them at least once a year (and more typically on a quarterly or
monthly basis). Portico processes content into the archive on a daily basis.

This spreadsheet includes 4 tabs:

Tab 1: Introduction - This page describing the spreadsheet.

Tab 2: Summary - The summary tab will indicate whether this spreadsheet is for all publishers and journals preserved
with Portico or one specific publisher. It also provides a summary of the content that has been committed to the Portico
archive for that one publisher or for all publishers.

Tab 3: Details - The details tab includes information on every title committed to the Portico archive for just one publisher or
for all publishers. This tab lists the exact issues in the archive for those titles for which processing has begun and also
includes those titles that the publisher(s) have committed to Portico but which do not yet have content in the archive.

Tab 4: Definitions - The definitions tab includes definitions of the terminology used throughout this spreadsheet.

Portico is a working preservation service and archive and our holdings increase on a daily basis. The most recent
holdings information available can always be found at

Term Definition
Back Content Historical content for this title. Portico works with each signed publisher to
set up an ongoing feed of content for titles in current publication. Content
published prior to the date of that ongoing feed is considered "back
content".
Back Content - Digitized Print Content that was first printed on paper and which the publisher
subsequently digitized. Typically digitized print content is provided to
Portico in a different format than the current content and may be processed
into the archive separately.
Back Content - Electronic Content which was born digital and was published prior to the
Content establishment of an ongoing feed of data from the publisher to Portico.
Current Content Content that comes to Portico via the ongoing feed of data from the
publisher (usually monthly or quarterly).
E-ISSN The ISSN assigned to the e-version of a journal. If a publisher is providing
Portico the E-ISSN for a title in the bibliographic data that accompanies
each article, then that E-ISSN will appear in this field. If the bibliographic
data that is provided to Portico does not contain an E-ISSN, then the E-
ISSN field in the Portico Holdings spreadsheet will be "N/A".

Holdings Holdings is a list of the specific issues of this title from this publisher where
one or more articles published in the issue are currently preserved in the
Portico archive (please be aware that we may receive content for the same
title from multiple publishers). Cases where Portico has not yet processed
any content for this committed title will be indicated by the phrase "Not yet
processed". Portico does not necessarily process content into the archive
in the order in which it was originally published and therefore the Portico
holdings can appear spotty at this level of detail. It is also possible for
Portico to process an "update" to an article before processing the original
issue, leading to a situation where an issue in the archive contains only
one article until such time as the original submission and its full contents
are processed. We will continue to process the back and current content
of all our publishers until we are "caught up" and are only processing the
future content on an ongoing basis.
We provide this level of detail to support requests from librarians who are
freeing shelf space at their institution and would like to do so by disposing
of the print volumes of content preserved in Portico.

PCA Some publishers choose to use Portico as one of the post-cancellation
access (PCA) or perpetual access methods they provide to their subscriber
libraries. Publishers either choose to provide PCA to all of their titles
through Portico or none of their titles, they may not select titles for PCA.

PCA - No This title is not available for PCA through Portico.

PCA - Yes This title is available for PCA through Portico to institutional subscribers
who licensed it from this publisher.
Print ISSN The ISSN assigned to the print version of a journal. If a publisher is
providing Portico with a print ISSN for a title in the bibliographic data that
accompanies each article, then that print ISSN will appear in this field. If
the bibliographic data that is provided to Portico does not contain a print
ISSN, then the print ISSN field in the Portico Holdings spreadsheet will be
"N/A".

Status The status of this title within Portico.

Status - Preserved A title with the status of "Preserved_x001D_ has at least some content
(and perhaps all historical content) processed and preserved in the
Status - Queued archive.
A title with the status of "Queued" has not yet had any content preserved,
but it has been committed to Portico by the publisher.
Title The title of the journal. Portico identifies content by the publisher of the
content, the print ISSN assigned in the bibliographic data for the content,
and the e-ISSN assigned in the bibliographic data for the content - the title
does not play a part in the identification of the content. Some publishers
provide content from previous titles catalogued under the current title and
ISSN of the journal. Other publishers provide Portico with the historical
content cataloged with the historical titles and ISSN. Portico uses this
information from the bibliographic metadata to confirm our rights to
preserve the content, and thus the holdings spreadsheet reflects how the
content is provided to Portico. We are looking forward to the ability to
provide additional and more flexible collection management facilities in the
future.

Years The Years field provides a snapshot of the range of content currently
preserved in the Portico archive. As with Holdings, this information may
change from day-to-day and month-to-month as additional content is
processed. The first year is the earliest year for which some content is
preserved in the Portico archive and the last year is the latest year for
which some content is preserved in the Portico archive. Please note that
we may not yet have all the intervening years of content preserved, but we
fully expect to as we "catch up" on all the back content for this publisher.
