“TRADITIONAL FARMING”

Traditional Farming Method is the ancient food production system and

the original type of agriculture it is has been practiced for thousands of years.
Traditional farming is not only the world’s oldest farming method but also the
main source of improving phase of farming technology like conventional,
modern and organic farming it promote genetic diversity too. Increasing
environmental awareness farmers following modern and scientific
understanding of ecology, soil science, irrigation, using traditional method like
crop rotations, compost / dung fertilizer, natural weed, biological pest control
to protect the ecosystem.

Traditional farming is very similar to organic farming where farmer has a

mixed farm of livestock, fruit and crops. Now days only few farmers get involve
in traditional farming on least developed and developing countries, beside that
most of the countries use modern technology, chemical fertilizer and pesticides.
Due to the modern farming make lots of damage on environment and human
health. Efficient traditional farming system still very important there are some
small scales farms practice in mountain region Nepal. To minimized the health
and environmental risk, farmers wearing and going to start organic farming
and growing food without any harm on environment.

Organic food user are increasing rapidly in the world in this way it is
better option to improve the economic condition of locals. Traditional
agricultural practices should be understood and conserved before they are lost
with the rapid advance of modern agriculture in developing countries.

“MODERN FARMING”
Modern farming means farming using modern techniques and
technology. That means farming with the facilities of modern science and
technologies. Using modern science and technologies in farming increase the
farming productions. Farming is the cultivation of domestic animals, fish,
birds, plants, crop etc. For the purpose of food, cloth and other products
essential for sustain life. Farming is playing a vital role in the development of
human civilization. Before industrial revolution most of the people worked in
farming all over the world. Most of those people used to farming for their family
needs of food, cloth etc. They had no target of world marketplace and produce
very low due to using traditional farming methods. But now the development of
agriculture and farming technology has greatly increased the farming
productivity. And the farmers are now able to buy and sell their products in the
world markets.

In the early 20th century by using synthetic nitrogen with pesticides,

mechanization and mined rock phosphate the crop production has greatly
increased and it bought green revolution in rice, wheat, corn etc. Production. In
the past the farmers use plough to dig the soil. But now farmer use modern
equipment like multi facilities tractor to dig the soil. In past farmer were
dependent on natural condition and fertilizers and produce very low
production. But now the farmers use synthetic fertilizers, high productive
breeds, pesticides, proper water contamination, mechanization and farm
subsiders which greatly increased the farming productivity. The population
around the world is increasing rapidly. More people needs more products like
food, cloth etc. which depends on farming production. So, we need more
production in farming which is not possible in traditional farming. So, modern
farming is a must to get more production according to rapid population growth.

FOR YOU, WHAT IS THE BEST FARMING SYSTEM? TRADITIONAL OR

MODERN FARMING?
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of any country especially in
the Philippines which is an agricultural country. Human survival depends on
the evolution of agriculture and sustainable agriculture. With today’s
technological era, everything is modernized and technology replaces what was
once traditional in nature. But, which is really better, Traditional Farming or
Modern Farming?

If I were to ask my grandmother – who was once a farmer and used to

traditional farming – which is better between the two, she told me that the two
farming systems has their pros and cons. In Traditional Farming, the pros are:
1) it keeps natural resources open and avoid too much exploitation of it, 2) it
employs more people other than farmers, thus giving them work for a living,
and 3) for them, traditional farming is much reliable than modern farming. On
the other hand, its cons includes: 1) Farmers will suffer doing traditional
farming knowing that the country has a poor economy, 2) Farmers will not gain
enough of what they harvest because in this type of farming, the production is
not large enough to gain profit, sometimes it is deficient to gain back their
capital. But when it comes to Modern Farming, it has its own pros and cons,
too, its pros include: 1) It is faster and efficient than the traditional farming
system, 2) the equipment used in this type of farming lasts longer than the
animals used in traditional farming and 3) also, it yields large production of
crops. Its cons includes: 1) it requires large capital to have this type of farming,
2) it is more expensive to do for a repair and maintenance of the equipment,
and 3) ofcourse it is not eco-friendly because it uses machines that might be
harmful to the environment. My grandmother told me that it is really hard to
choose between the two because of the current number of the population which
still continues to increase that needs a lot of crop production for survival but in
return our environment might be at stake. But still she chose to have the
Traditional Farming because it is considered to be a sustainable type of
farming whereas it do not affect the environment that much and we have done
it before, we can amend things and do it better again this time without much
relying on machineries. It may require extensive labor but still, the crops we
produce are with assurance that all are safe and our countrymen will have a
job for a living. Still, Traditional Farming System is the best choice to be
chosen, considering the current situation of our environment today. With that,
we are also helping in preserving our nature.
