Four Philosophical Perspectives of Art

Art as Imitation

Plato was the first to introduce the idea of art as imitation, For Plato
(strangely enough, in view of the high literary worth of his dialogues) poets,
dramatists and painters were mere imitators and creators of
appearances, thrice removed from real or objective truth, which for him
could only be found in the Ideal and super-sensible Form of Beauty.

Art is Representation

For Aristotle, Beauty consists of an orderly and systematic

arrangement of parts (whether of an object or system of ideas, such
as the nature and elements of the Tragedy in poetry) that forms a
whole characterized by magnitude and symmetry.
