Little Boy with a Slingshot

Once upon a time Sammy and his sister Marie visited their grandparents at their farm.
Sammy picked up a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods,
but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for the
lunch. As he was walking back, he saw Grandma’s pet duck.

Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly which hit the duck square in the head and
killed it. He was shocked and grieved. In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the pile of
woods. Marie had seen it all from the window, but she said nothing. After the lunch, the
next day Grandma said “Marie, let’s wash the dishes.” Marie said,”But Grandma, Sammy
told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.”

Then she whispered to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” Sammy got nervous knowing his
sister knew about the duck and if he did not obey, she might tell his grandparents about
it. So, without saying anything, he did the dishes.

Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing but Grandma said, “
I’m sorry but I need Marie to help make a supper.” Marie just smiled and said,” Well
that’s all right because Sammy told me he wanted to help.”

She whispered again to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” So, Marie went fishing and
Sammy stayed to help. After several days of Marie taking advantage of Sammy, he finally
couldn’t stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the
duck.

Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said,” Sweetheart, I know. I was standing at
the window and I saw the whole thing but because I love you, I’ve forgiven you. I was just
wondering how long you would let Marie take advantage of you.”

Skateboards
Skateboards are sport equipment used for the activity of skateboarding. A skateboard
consists of a specially designed maple wood board combined with a polyurethane coating
in order to have smoother slides and stronger durability. Most skateboards are-made
with 7 plies of this wood.

Many skateboards exist with exotic or alternative constructions. Traditional complete

skateboards consist of the deck (often with grip tape applied on top to enhance traction),
trucks (with urethane bushings), wheels (with sealed bearings), nuts, and bolts to fasten
the truck and wheel assembly to the bottom of the deck. Recently, electric skateboards
have appeared. These no longer require the propelling of the skateboard by means of the
feet; rather an eclectic motor propels the board, fed by an electric battery.

The board types depend largely upon its desired function. The two common types of
skateboards are the long board and the short board. Long boards are the type of
skateboards with longer wheelbases (over 33 inches long) and larger, softer wheels.
Short boards are the type of skateboards which commonly have a rectangular shape kick

Land Reclamation
Land reclamation will definitely increase land area for a certain country. More land has
been made available for development. More buildings and infrastructure can be built.

However, much greenery has been removed in order for the land needed. Land
reclamation can be damaging to corals and marine life. Corals are usually moved to
another place when land is to be reclaimed. The corals might not be able to survive in that
certain habitat, and thus die out.
In some countries, where the project is large-scale, they do not even bother to re-plant the
corals elsewhere, instead just reclaim the land on their habitat, causing them to die out
immediately. Marine life, such as fish, might not have enough food after the underwater
plantations are destroyed due to reclamation of land. This applies to the food chain. The
water might also be polluted from the soil used to reclaim land, causing the fish to die and
blocking out sunlight, depriving the underwater plants of growth. Marine habitat arc also
destroyed; therefore, the marine creatures would be forced to move to another new habitat.
Some might not be able to adapt, and thus die out. Some would just die without even
finding a new habitat, as they cannot move long distances in water.

Finally, the reasons and examples look tempting to humans, but marine life is life too! We
should try to protect it as much as possible, instead of just focusing on the advantages.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Captain Phillips is an upcoming 2013 American biographical action thriller film
directed by Paul Greengrass based upon the book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali
Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan
Talty, and starring Tom Hanks. It is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and
Michael De Luca. The film tells a biopic of merchant mariner Captain Richard
Phillips, who was taken hostage for several days by Somali Pirates when the
container ship Maersk Alabama which sailed from southern Oman drown along the
coast of Somalia and then to Kenya was hijacked in 2009.
Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), a veteran merchant mariner, still lives in
his native New England, and he’s a plainspoken family man full of anxiety about
the economically bleak new world his kids are facing. When his wife (Chaterine
Keener) drops him off at the airport, we can see reverse her. The film then cuts
to Somalia, a land of dust and poverty, where the pirates are recruited for their
mission as if they were migrant farm workers lining up to be chosen for that
day’s labor. Greengrass doesn’t have to fill in much about the violent, chaotic
breakdown of Somalia to let us know that these men have little choice.
The film does not generate quite the same level of excruciating suspense as some of
Greengrass’ previous triumphs, but it nonetheless holds us hostage as it proceeds. As
for the four Somali immigrants, they are remarkably effective in their first
professional acting gigs

Nature vs Nurture

People wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviours are formed. Two distinct schools of
thought on the matter have developed. The two approaches are very different from one another. The
controvercy is often referred to as nature and nurture.

Those who support the nature side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behaviour patterns are
largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little to do with our abilities,
characteristics and behaviour is central to this theory.

Proponents of the nurture theory claim that our environment is more important than our biologically based
instinct in determining how we will act. They see humans as beings whose behaviour is almost completely
shaped by their surroundings.
Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behaviour. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our
behaviour lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the controvercy will continue for a long time is
certain.

31. What do the nurture supporters think about human personality?

A. Human personalities are developed for a long time
B. Genetic factors play big roles in a person behaviour
C. Our abilities are determined by our biological parents
D. Our environment plays an important role in our personalities
E. Our behaviour isn’t determined by our surrounding

32. The main idea of the first paragraph is ...

A. There are two opinions about what determines our personalities
B. Personalities and behaviour are formed by nature and environment
C. The nature and nurture are two matters that determine our personalities
D. The environment has no influence on the formation of our personalities

Cancer is a group of diseases that can cause almost any signs or symptoms. The signs and symptoms will
depend on where the cancer is, how big it is and how much it affects the organs or tissues. If a cancer has
spread (metastasized), signs or symptoms may appear in different parts of the body.
As a cancer grows, it can begin to push on nearby organs, blood vessels and nerves. This pressure cause some
of the sign and symptom of cancer. If the cancer is in a critical area. Such as certain parts of the brain, even the
smallest tumor can cause symptoms. But sometimes cancer start in places where it will not cause any signs or
symptoms until it has grown quite large. Cancers of the pancreas, for example, usually do not cause symptoms
until they grow large enough to press on nearby nerves or organs (this causes back or belly pain). Others may
grow around the bile duct and black the flow of bile.
This causes the eyes and skin to look yellow (jaundice). By the time a pancreatic cancer causes signs or
symptoms like these, it’s usually in an advanced stage. This means it has grown and spread beyond the place it
started the pancreas.
A cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue) or weight loss. This may be because
cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the
body makes energy from food. Or the cancer may cause the immune system to react in ways that produce
these signs and symptoms. Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause
symptoms which are nor usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release
substances that raise blood clots in veins of the legs. Some lung cancers make hormone-like substances that
raise blood calcium levels. This affects nerves and muscles, making the person feel weak and dizzy.
Treatment works best when cancer is found early while it’s still small and is less likely to have spread to other
parts of the body. This often means a better chance for a cure. Especially if the cancer can be removed with
surgery.

33. From the text, we learn that ....

A. there is no disease which has no cure
B. we should seek early detection of cancer to have the best treatment
C. we should ignore any signs of cancer because it can be removed with surgery
D. when we feel weak and dizzy, it is sign of cancer
E. healthy lifestyle can prevent us from cancer

34. “ ... how big it is and how much it affects the organs or tissues” (Paragraph 1).
The underlined word is closest in meaning to ....
A. influences D. changes
B. converses E. culminates
C. recovers

Faster planes and cheaper flights are making travel easier than before. In the most ‘developed’ societies,
visiting exotic places is a sought-after status symbol. The tourism industries of both developed and developing
countries have recognized this fact and are learning to take advantage of it.
There are, however, a few problems associated with this new industry. Initially, there is the increasing crime
rate. Some locals see tourists as easy prey because, not only are they unfamiliar with the territory and
therefore unable to take care themselves, but also they carry visible items of wealth, such as cameras and
jewelry which can be disposed of quickly for profit.
Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of spreading contagious
diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic before their illness is
diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many diseases which resist antibiotics is causing scientists to be
increasingly concerned about this issue.
Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by too many visitors.
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by tourists and there are plans to
restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral cays.
These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself to an extensive
tourism development programme.

35. Why does the natural environment become one of the serious problems associated with the faster planes and
cheaper flight? Because ....
A. It easily started an epidemic before their illness was diagnosed
B. It can be destroyed by too many visitors
C. The health problem will increase
D. They carry visible items of wealth
E. It can increase crime rate

36. “One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic before their illness is diagnosed.” (paragraph 3)

Dear Leonard:

I (would like to express my sincere condolences on) was shocked with the recent passing of your father.
Pamela and the children also send their thoughts and prayers to you and your family at this difficult time.
Although I didn’t know your dad that well, on the half dozen or so occasions that I spent time in his company
over the years, I did come to realize his great kindness and compassion towards those less fortunate than him.
And I do know that he was very highly respected throughout this community and profession, and his good
works changed the lives of many.
You were truly fortunate to have such a man as a model in your life.
As you know, it was not that long ago that my own father passed away, so I have some idea of what you and
your family are going through. I realize that no words of comfort are quite enough to replace the loss.
Please pass my deepest sympathies on to your mother, and brother, and sister, and to all of your father’s
grandchildren.

Yours in sympathy,
Gord Henderson

A Life Lesson
By Anonymous
I lost my father when I was only nine years old. This was the biggest lose I have had. He was everything to me,
his only daughter. We were so close. I did not lose him to death though. I lost him in a much harder way. I lost
my father to drugs. He got addicted and started to ignore my brother and me.
One cool summer night, my brother, a couple of our friends, and I were watching Scary Movie 3 in the living
room. Around 9:30 pm., when I looked toward the kitchen, I saw orange and yellow flames reflecting off the
door’s window. It was a mess explosion caused by his careless actions under the influence of the drugs.
After the fire was out, I saw my dad run around to the backyard and jump into the pool. I knew then that he
had gotten burned. He ended up confined in the hospital. After he got better, they put him in jail for a month
under drug charges. I was so mad and hurt, and suffered from severe depression. It destroyed my health and
my social life.
One day, one of my teacher stopped me in the hall to ask if I was okay. She asked if she could help me, if I
would tell her what was going on. So I did. She helped save me and lift me back up. After a while, I started to
feel and do better. She is now one of my greatest friends and mentors, and we talk daily. I could never repay
her for everything she has done for me.
Through my experiences, I learned never to do anything without thinking of how it will impact the people
around me.
