PHC 102- PHARMACEUTICAL INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Laboratory Activity #1
Common Laboratory Equipment and their Functions

INTRODUCTION:
Pharmacy is a course filled with experimental laboratory activities, whether qualitative or quantitative. Students will spend most
of their time in the laboratory investigating and verifying chemical principles, test hypothesis, observe and make inferences or
generalizations as they explore phenomena, that is why it is very important to be familiar with some of the most used laboratory
equipment.
Throughout this course, you will be expected to identify, select, and safely use each laboratory apparatus. This activity will allow
you to begin recognizing apparatus names, units of measurements and their functions.

OBJECTIVES:
After completing the activity, you should be able to:
1. Identify standard laboratory equipment and apparatuses used in laboratories.
2. Identify the units of measurement, if applicable, for each piece of laboratory equipment.
3. Identify the safety precautions necessary for each piece of laboratory equipment.
4. Differentiate between the uses of various laboratory apparatuses in terms of need, accuracy, and precision.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. This laboratory activity should be answered and passed INDIVIDUALLY.
2. List down five (5) laboratory apparatuses under each four types of material: glass, porcelain, wood and metal.
3. Search and paste an image (2 x 2 inch in size) of each apparatus and specify their primary function and unit/s of measurement
(if applicable).
4. After completing this activity, save your activity sheets in PDF format. Upload or attach your activity sheets on the Laboratory
Activity #1 section using your Neo LMS website account. Before you upload, please rename and follow this format for the file
name: Laboratory Activity and Number- Surname (Example: Laboratory Activity #1- Senido)

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:
1. Suggest ways on how to store and handle properly the different glass wares to avoid accidents in the laboratory.

2. Why is that most of the containers of chemical substances and those used for heating are made up of glass rather than metal?

3. What precautions or safety measures should be implemented to promote laboratory safety? Specify at least three (3).
