Lesson 2 WHAT TOOLS AND SKILLS ARE USEFUL IN CONDUCTING AN

INVESTIGATION?
Researchers use various tools and equipment in ensuring that they get the most reliable and accurate data in the course
of their scientific investigation. This is crucial because the success or failure of any study lies in the manner by which the
set of data is gathered and analyzed. A project with clear and measurable variables that can be evaluated or scrutinized
by other researchers and still yield the same results is an example of a good research of laboratory tools and equipment

The proper and skillful utilization of laboratory tools and equipment is therefore necessary in safeguarding the integrity of
both the researcher and the study itself.

SOME APPARATUS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN THE LABORATORY

Figure shows some apparatus commonly found in the laboratory. Take time to familiarize yourself with these items as
well as the safe way of handling them.

Alcohol lamp Beaker Erlenmeyer flask Florence flask Test tube Thermometer

Spatula Test tube rack Bunsen burner Iron stand

Balance Mortar and pestle Test tube holder

To avoid accidents in the laboratory, study the precautionary listed below and be sure to follow them strictly.

 Read the instructions carefully before performing any laboratory activity.

 Handle glassware with care to avoid breaking them.
 When heating liquid in a test tube, hold the test tube in a slanting position (about 37 from the vertical position)
and never towards anybody (A). This is because the heated liquid may spurt from the tube at any moment.
 Keep volatile and flammable liquids (such as alcohol and carbon tetrachloride) away from open flames to avoid
burns and fires (B).
 Get proper instructions from your teacher before handling chemicals. For example, to dilute an acid, add the acid
to the water, NOT the other way around (C).
 Report immediately to your teacher any accident that may happen in the course of a laboratory activity for proper
first aid or treatment.

STANDARD UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

Measurement refers to the process of comparing a quantity such as length, mass, or time with a standard unit such as
meter, gram, or second.

The two systems of measurement being used today are the metric system and the British system. The metric system has
been adopted by majority of the nations because it is easier to convert from one unit to another. Examples of standard
units of measurement in the metric system are:

Set A Set B
For length meter(m) centimetre(cm)
For mass kilogram(kg) gram(g)
For time Second(s) second(s)
Length, mass, and time are three examples of fundamental quantities, so called because other quantities, called
derived quantities, are obtained from them. For example:

Area is obtained by multiplying two measurements of length (eg, length x width).

Volume is obtained by multiplying three measurements of length (eg,length x width x height).
Density is obtained by dividing mass by volume.
