II. INTODUCTION
Upon completion of the lesson, students will understand the introduction to literature; in addition, the objectives
listed above have met.

ACTIVITY 1 - TURN UP YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Literature comes from the Latin word “LITERA” which is literally means an acquaintance with letters, the root
definition of literature. It is a body of literary productions; oral, written or visual, containing imaginative language
that realistically portrays thoughts, emotions, and experiences of the human condition.
Literature is language in use that provides insights and intellectual stimulation to the reader. As one explores
literature, he likewise discovers the beauty of language.
Literature is a product of a particular culture that concretizes mans array of values, emotions, actions and ideas.
It is therefore a creation of human experience that tells about people and their world.
Literature is an art that reflects the works of imagination, aesthetics, and creative writing which are distinguished
for the beauty of style or expression as in fiction, poetry, essay, or drama, in distinction from scientific treatises and
works which contain positive knowledge.

III. ABSTRACTION AND GENERALIZATION

GEAR UP YOUR MIND!

“What is literature?” is a mind-boggling question that has become the usual jargon in classroom discussion. One
needs to come face to face with literature itself to understand and determine its meaning. This requires coming to
terms with the past, and, one’s culture in comparison with the other countries’ cultures and norms.
No other study is more important that of literature. It is a product of life and about life. A good piece of literature
presents a slice of life; and makes the reader capture truth and beauty. One needs to be sensitive and receptive
enough to participate in the significant experiences as he reads. He begins to think and compare, sees his own self,
his own experiences, and those of others; laughs at his own follies and grimaces over miseries and unpleasant
memories he doesn’t wish to recall as he unfolds the pages of a good literary piece. Hence literature does not only
supply the mind with cognitive knowledge but most importantly it refines thoughts and feelings.
Literature is an art. It is a written record of man’s best thoughts, fine feelings and emotions. The best thoughts of
the world, knowledge and appreciation are embodied in literature and are essential elements of culture.

Activity 1 : Literature, as compared to other forms of writing, possesses distinct qualities that separate it from the
rest. These include; universality, artistry, intellectual value, suggestiveness, spiritual value, and style.

IV.APLICATION
A. Reading is a complex process. The recognition and comprehension of written symbols are influenced by the
reader’s perceptual skills, word analysis, language background and mindset, and reading ability. In reading we
may be able to find different values namely; 1). Factual values 2) Emotional values 3) Human values 4) Ethical
values and 5) Symbolic values. Read a literary work of any genre. (Provide the copy of the literary work) Identify
the values you find after reading the literary work. Justify your answer by “quoting lines or paragraph. “ Explain
your answer.
B. Read another literary work of any genre and analyze it to identify what distinct qualities or literary standards it
has or have. Explain your answer.
C. Discuss and explain the right approach or approaches you will use in the study of that particular literary work.
D. Prepare your output both written and oral.
1. Written output - Hand written (Bond paper using black ink) or computerized.
2. Oral output - Video yourself while reporting your output orally. Send it to class group in messenger.
