Office Hours: 8:00am-5:00 Mon-Fri

Course Description:
This course covers the study of the methodologies used in conducting engineering research. It includes the
types and application of research, characteristics of a good research, research design, research instruments
and data gathering procedures. It also deals with the study of writing a research proposal and various formats

Course objectives:
The primary objective of this course is to develop a research orientation among the students and to acquaint
them with fundamentals of research methods. Specifically, the course aims at introducing them to the basic
concepts used in research and their approach. Some other objectives of the course are:
• Explain the research methods and procedures
• Write a research proposal
• Formulate a research problem
• Prepare research proposal

Course Format:
The format of the course will be based on the assigned readings, exercises, assignments and cases from
your instructor’s Learning Management System (LMS). The assignments and cases should enhance your
understanding and comprehension of the material provided. In addition, the cases should provide a link
from the classroom to relevant engineering situations and problems.

Online Participation and Attendance:

Students are expected to attend their online class on a regular basis. Students are expected to complete the
assigned readings set forth each week during the specified week and to contribute constructively to the
online class discussion.

Course Requirements:

Assignments
During the semester, students will be asked to complete short assignments in every module. Assignments
must be submitted using the PhilCST LMS and must be submitted on or before the deadline. All late
assignments will be given a deduction of 10 points from the grade obtained. Any assignment submitted
more than one week late will no longer be accepted and a zero grade will be assigned

Quizzes
There will be quizzes every end of the module based on the material and readings provided. Quizzes are
taken in the PhilCST LMS but could only be taken during the scheduled date and time. Questions will in
the form of Multiple Choice and focus on applications of the concepts you will learn in the course

Exams
There will be three major examinations; a preliminary, a mid-term, and a final examination in this course.
Each exam will be worth 30% towards your final course grade. These exams will occur on the date indicated
on the syllabus, unless otherwise noted. The preliminary exam, the midterm exam, and the final exams will
be online examinations completed via the learning management system website – philcst.net/lms. All
students will complete the regular portion of the preliminary exam, the midterm exam, and the final exam.
Make-ups are given only with prior approval from the instructor.

Research Proposal
Each student will be asked to focus on a particular issue of interest and to prepare a research proposal. Your
proposal may utilize qualitative or quantitative research technique(s). Research proposal will be due on
January 5th 2021. Students will be asked to submit a draft version one week prior to the final deadline.
Additional details will be provided later in the course.

Grading:

Final Grades of the students will be based from knowledge and understanding of the course which will
constitute fifty percent (50%) of the final grade. The other fifty percent will be based from the Assessment
Result (Evaluation of the course outcomes). Knowledge and
understanding will be evaluated according to the following:
1. Examinations (Check-Up Examination, Preliminary Examination, Mid-Term
Examination, Semi-Final Examination, and Final Examination);
2.Recitations (Preliminary Recitation; Mid-Term Recitation; and Final Recitation);
3. Quizzes, and;
4. Assignments
5. Including the laboratory experiments, and laboratory report if the course has a laboratory
component

The final course grade will be computed according to the following formula:
1. [(Knowledge and Understanding Result) x 0.50] + [Assessment Result] x 0.50;
2. The passing standard shall be the grade of 50% but the student must have attended at least eighty percent
(80%) of the total number of required meeting of the course, and must have a rating of “Competent” in all
the Assessment Result; and;
3. The table below shows a sample of the range of percentage marks and their corresponding equivalents.
